My I. alba has been blooming for about a month now. Love these guys and can't get over how big they are! I'll get some night shots tomorrow.

You have some nice yellows in the alba flowers.

Here is one from this morning.

I haven't had much luck growing the I. alba here. What kind of spot do they prefer? I have some new growing areas opened up since we added onto the house and I'd love to give them another try.

They do best in the ground so they can spread their roots, need something sturdy to climb on as they can get heavy and like full, blazing hot sun along with lots of food. The downside of putting them in the ground is that they tend to shoot out runners like crazy that will latch on and strangle anything within reach. I spend about 15 minutes every few days cutting back runners or redirecting them to climb up and also cut off all but a few maturing seed pods when I see them.

Considering their growth habit, I imagine they can become extremely invasive in the warmer climes in just one season unless rigorously kept under control. I do not know if the seeds would survive your zone 5 winters .. they do survive with ease my zone 8.

Oh, no fear of them becoming invasive here! I do get a lot of I. purpurea volunteers, but they're easily manageable. Anyway, I have a nice new south-facing wall with nothing growing there. Big Grin Think I'll give them a try next year in that spot. And it's right next to my also new french doors, so I can keep an eye on them if them bloom. Smiling Looks like I'll need to look for trellises on sale.

Here are some night shots of the I. alba. Used 40% flash F8/30. Love how shimmery they come out.

Nice shots Anne! Do you have an external flash? I'm thinking about getting one.

Thanks .. no external .. a lot of people don't realize that you can control the strength of the flash on their digital cameras. Once I discovered it a whole new world opened up for me at night.

Check your manual - the settings only appear in mine when I have my camera set for flash.

I'm trying to recall ever seeing an Ipomoea with squared off petals before! Interesting! What kind of scent does it have?
