I have two japanese painted ferns, one I have had for three years and one only since March of last year. I thought at one time I had lost the older one, but it made a great comeback, never did figure out what the problem or the cure was.

Japanese painted fern is another one I just planted last year. I'm so hoping it survived the winter! Still waiting for signs of growth on any of the ferns. Of course, since it's trying to snow right now, maybe they're better off huddling underground! Hilarious!

Love the Japanese Painted Ferns ... they are so pretty!

Woofie, oh my goodness, SNOW? We're into summer weather here already with temperatures in the upper 80's and humidity to match! I don't mind the 80ยบ+ temperatures but the high humidity is stifling! I'll keep my fingers crossed that it warms up in the PNW real soon and that you see the lovely fronds of the painted ferns peeking out! Smiling

Some of our HUGE native Western Sword Ferns. Pics taken 10 mins ago. They grow like beautiful weeds out here! We cut them to the ground every year in early march, then cover them with a one inch thick layer of compost. The fronds are not fully splayed out yet. As they are now they stand almost 4 feet tall and will eventually have a 7 foot spread!! you can see a mature "Patriot" Hosta in between them, to give you an idea of how big they are.

Here in East Tennessee we have resurrection fern growing on Red Cedar which is actually Juniperus virginiana (we think). Photos of it show a shrubby tree, but ours aren't.

Love that fern! It grows on the old oaks on the Gulf Coast. I tried to keep some alive here that I took from coast. It died and could not be resurrected! Just too hot and dry in the summer, I guess.

Yep, too dry, not necessarily too hot. They do need shade in the heat though.

Well here's an update on my ferns and how well they are doing this year.
My tree fern is doing great as is my mahogany fern, phlebodium aureum and holly fern. My Japanese fern is really spreading now and I think I might have to divide it up.

I think some ferns are amongst the most attractive plants of all.Happy to admit that I only found this form late last year and it became my early Christmas present Smiling Been looking for this better variant for some time, you would think it more readily available--it's probably a weed in your neck of the woods!

I love ferns, but don't have many now that I live in the desert. The one that is best for me now is the plain old Asparagus fern. This one I had when I lived in the Marshall Islands. It was given to me by a friend, and she called it an "Irish Lace Fern". It needed tremendous humidity, and was a lovely fern. Do any of you have it or recognize it? I miss this plant so much!
