Thanks Barbara, I guess I have just the right conditions to keep them happy, also a lot of TLC on my part. Green Grin!

I used to live in zone 9 in Houma LA. The Amaryllis I received one year for a Christmas gift bloomed then and afterwards I planted them outside. They bloomed every spring and multiplied so that when I moved I was able to bring several large sized bulbs to plant here in zone 7 in Sherwood AR and I still left probably 20 large bulbs there. They seem to survive here through our usually mild winters but bloom a little later in the spring. They have multiplied here also which makes me feel that they aren't quite as tropical a plant as normally thought.
I never try to force a second winter bloom since I enjoy them in my yard instead. Smiling Smiling

MaryJane: Welcome to the Amaryllis forum. As you have discovered, Amaryllis will grow much further north than you would expect from the zone maps. To put it in perspective, some of the native Amaryllis come from high elevations which are colder in the winter. Some of the older cultivars like Red Lion, Apple blossom, H. striatum and H. johnsonii , seem to be more cold hardy. It seems to be dependent on the particular microclimate, more than the zone, where you have planted your bulbs. As long as the basal plate doesn't freeze solid they can do OK, esp. if the bulbs have a layer of insulating mulch over them, when a hard frost is expected. Wet ground is as much a limiting factor as cold, since the bulbs want to be dry during their dormant period. Wet cold bulbs will be susceptible to disease. Winters are usually wetter as you go further north.

mcash70 said:Fiat, if you purchased your bulbs they will bloom around Christmas or a little later. It is the second year that there can be a problem getting them to bloom.

Here is an article that I wrote, perhaps it will help. http://garden.org/ideas/view/m...

Thank you for sharing your article - will be following your instructions so I can get my older plants back to blooming! Thumbs up

Welcome! annectoo, ATP is a great place with great people, don't be shy to visit any forum of your choosing even if it is not in your zone, state or country. What is your grow zone?

Thank you, I hope the article helps you get your old bulbs to bloom soon. So far I have been 100% successful, I suppose eventually one will not bloom for me. Hilarious!

I think about 7 or 8 noid bulbs, giveaways from my aunt before. In that batch only got 2 bulbs that I remember that managed to rebloom in Spring..the other just gave me foliage. Really have to get another bowl to separate some of them..pretty sure there will be bulblets already.

Today I checked on my resting bulbs and surprise, 2 had scapes coming up, my other Apple Blossom and Aphrodite. I was hoping to have them spread out a little more but I guess I won't complain. Green Grin!

Yesterday I checked the resting bulbs and found that Amigo was getting leaves and Violetta a scape, I cleaned them up, gave them a good watering with tepid water, I never use cold as our water if frigid! I then decided to take out the remaining 2, Namintha and Red Pearl as it was obvious that they too will be sending up leaves and scapes pretty soon. All of the bulbs this year are in great shape and have gotten really large since last year. Hurray!
