Do you suppose...maybe if we all play rain sounds over and over and concentrate on bringing it here...maybe? Would do just about anything to get rain! DH used to have a radio that had recorded sound effects like that because he needs some background noise to sleep better.

I saw this article about controlled burns. I know one thing for sure, however...controlled burns have to be done by experts and all kinds of precautions taken. I used to volunteer at a nature center and they did controlled burns in the prairie section every year. My area should probably have them, but it won't be done because it costs money to do them...and who would want to pay? And when we had some trees cut down and others cut back last year...the wood and brush is still there on the property. We need to do something with it.

Below is an article about the Lost Pines of Bastrop. A little prehistoric forest cut off from the bigger pine forests in East Texas.
When I get home sick for the Coast, I can drive a few miles to Bastrop and be immersed in a forest of pine trees, much like those MS ones I grew up around. Unfortunately, they explode when they catch on fire. There were many around the houses that couldn't be saved. Hopefully, owners will learn that controlled burns are the safest way to go.

Not sure how much we got today, but the ground is fairly damp. 60% chance tomorrow.

We got over half an inch of rain over the weekend. Yayy! We only have a 20% chance for the rest of the week, but we'll take it. Smiling

Nothing measurable here, but it was cool when I got up this morning, like fall is in the air. Hope it lasts!

We did get a full inch of rain, believe it or not. It was glorious. I don't know if it's too late for our trees, but another massive water oak fell today. We were outside and heard the crash, it was as loud as lightning right next to the house. I wonder how many trees we'll still have standing by this time next year.

Hmmm. Sorry about the tree, so sad! Probably we'll have less trees standing. But the surviving trees and plants are my heros!

Sorry about the tree Dave. But glad to hear you got a good rain. Hopefully the first of a trend toward more rain.

Look on the bright side. That tree represents more nutrients for the soil and more hugelkultur material.

Jay, you know me well! My thinking went like this:

1) Relief that nobody was near this tree when it fell. It was like a schoolbus falling from the sky.

2) Aggravation by all these dead trees and limbs falling everywhere, and wondering what my woods will look like next year.

3) Shrugged and thought to myself, "Well, this'll rot and help build the soil for the next generation of trees."

No rain here, but a front is pushing in. The wind is cooler than usual. Almost tolerable to be outside.
