I got an eyeful of this humongous Stingray plant when delivering a large Rainbow tree. The owner is an avid gardener, but not an aroid enthusiast or specialist. I was, frankly, amazed. And what's more, just wait till you see the size of her Alocasia "Sarian"

I'm amazed something could grow that big with it's roots constrained so by that concrete curb. Maybe they're growing under the fence.

Evan, the curbing is superficial, meaning that it does not go down into the ground enough to serve as a root barrier. I have not been in touch with the owner of this plant since before winter so I do wonder how it fared through our cold spells.

That's the biggest singray i ever seen. I thought alocasia's have to stay in full shade. From your pic i am learning that stingray alocasia may be able to take full or part sun.I got couple of small stingray and Sariyan last september. Eventhough they were in a small container without much fertilizer, it's getting bigger. I am going to move them to large containers soon.

Most of my supermarket EE's are ready for ID. I'll wait a week or 2 for a little more size. Just a reminder LariAnn. Looks like this thread would be the place: The thread "EE's and ID's" in Philodendrons, Elephant Ears, and Other Aroids forum

Hi LariAnn.

You said that you were delivering a tree, so can we assume that this plant is S. FL?

I have three doing quite well under my pergola with pretty much shade. Should I venture one out and see what it does? I would hate to lose anything.

BTW, my Borneo Giant is taller than me, which actually doesn't say much. Rolling on the floor laughing

Take care

Nancy

Nice Hap!

Well I thought I had lost my 'Stingray' earlier in the Summer.
After getting it nicely thru the winter in the house a cold snap forced it into dormancy.
I actually thought it had died. It took over 2 months to break dormancy.
Sunday I re-potted 9 pups all about 12" tall w/ nice golf ball sized rhizomes.
There are still about a dozen in the original pot.
This winter they go into the GH! LOL!

'Sarian' is an oddball.
One would assume it would be hard to over-winter up here.
It actually sat in our Living Room all winter and never missed a beat.
While FAR from FL size it is still well over 5' tall now and is adding it's 4th leaf. All in a 5 gallon pot.
It's getting a pot upgrade this weekend.

Ric
