I am certain it depends on the environment. My last one lasted past the new year but by then the roots that grown down held the soil intact and I just mounded some leaves around that.

I don't even bother craving pumpkins anymore as they decompose so fast here in Florida. Cute idea tho if your in a little cooler climate.
