I have too many to mess with. They're all in the ground and pretty much on their own anyway. Further news has it that it might be: "Looks like one of David Shiigi's hybrids." Whoever David Shiigi is.
I would call it a vriesea hybris and leave it at that. I have quite a number of broms that could be any number of hybrids. They are so close to one another that evebn experts or growers can't tell. It's similar to orchids.
btw the little buggers that make my legs itch, are everywhere, not just by the bromeliads. We have a lanai over the deck and pool area that has a very tight mesh which prevents the buggers from getting through. Otherwise we wouldn't need the cage. For whatever reason these things hang low on the ground and only byte in that region.
