A well draining potting medium, lots of sun, warmth and humidity. I used to have our local supermarket cut fresh pineapple for me and I'd ask them to give me the top that was cut off so that I could grow it; just let the cut area dry out and callous over a few days and sit it on top of the soil or just beneath the soil and it would take root.

Here's the database link for Pineapple (Ananas comosus)

If it's indoors in a pot, yes lots of light. If he wants to put it outdoors for the summer, a little afternoon shade doesn't hurt. Here they like to grow in sort of semi-shade, although the pineapple fields you see in Hawaii and other places are in full sun.

Here's a thread about a blooming pineapple over on the Tropicals forum for you to send your friend to.

I grow my pineapple top in a container. I bring it outdoors and keep it there during late spring and as late as I can during late fall. It sure does like lots of sun here, and a good dousing of water since our temps soar quite high and very dry. But once temps start to dip in the mid 40's I bring it in and stays by my south facing window. I water it too to keep media moist. I use well draining media so it does not get too water logged. Give allowance around the plant, those leaves grow long and pokey as it tries to get as much light and sun as it can while indoors. I have not gotten it to bear fruit yet, I believe it takes about 3 years, so I am hoping it will be ready by 2016.

Agree with Elaine, in the Philippines where there are lots of pineapple farms, I see them grown in full sun, lining up the mountains or sometimes under coconut trees. They get lots of torrential rains there, but the warm to hot temps there with high humidity is how it likes to grow in.

For the pokey leaves, if you have the plant indoors, don't hesitate to cut off the ends of the leaves so they won't spear you! They're very sharp, and it doesn't hurt the plant one bit.

I even do this with mine that grow alongside the gravel walkways in my garden. I've leaned down to pull a few weeds and nearly caught one in the eye, too!
