With our harsh weather I went to making my planters in the gardens out of the styrofoam coolers. I have a few of the large plastic planters on sale at the end of the season at KMart a few years ago that have held up good.

But the styrofoam coolers with the stone cover or other decorative things I can put on them to look different are my favorite.

Last year was my first time to work with the styrofoam coolers. I am so thrilled with the result as far as having happy and healthy plants. Keeps the plants from drying out quickly, keeps the roots cooler in the summer, and provides insulation in the winter.

Would love to see some photos of what you do with these? Will they hold paint?

Lynn,
I love my styrofoam coolers they are great. The winter insulation is so great I have been planting things in them that are a little tender for my zone and they work out great.

Frilly,
I have never tired painting because I like the stone look and tile on them and it is just as cheap for me when I find the tile and stones at the resale stores. It is cheaper and easier for me than a bunch of paint.

This is where I added a suggestion for styrofoam pots.

Someday somewhere someone will dig a pot out of the ground in the distant future in the land of what used to be called Pennsylvania. They will be enamored how the styrofoam was so well preserved and encrusted with stones and tiles........Sign them. Sign them now and secure yourself in the history of the future. Its a FACT! nodding

I just saw a really neat planter idea on Zillow ideas. Hurray! Hurray!
What do you think of it? Reminds me of Dave's herb spiral.

Yes the styrofoam will be there a million years from now. They will probably look at it and wonder what the heck it is. Maybe I should make a note out of some of the sheet styrofoam I have so they will know that it was a flower pot. Hilarious!

Marilyn that is a great link. Love the colors of the pots. TY

Lynn I knew people thought I was crazy talking about making pots out of styrofoam coolers so I had to try to explain. It sounded crazy even to me when I thought about planting in them.

I made two last summer to plant some roses in to put on the patio on either side of the steps. I turned them long ways put some caulking on the lid to hold it on and cut the top so they would be tall. Rose roots go deep down so I wanted them deep for the rose roots.

The wire and rock one was darn interesting. I thought someone stole my pot when I say the Iron one. Big Grin I have the same exact pot design, maybe a little larger and had Burro's Tail in it for years.

I found the iron one interesting too. I liked the succulents but don't do tendrers except full summer. I have a couple of plastic/styrofoam pots which look a lot like that. The rock spiral was what caught my eye but not enough room or talent to do something like that.

I don't think my hands/skin would hold up to making the wire one, but sure love it.
