I thought the same thing, so the name sorta appealed to me! Not that I have had any problem with slugs on my daylilies, my Hostas are a different story.

I too wondered if there might have been a personal reason for the name. I was thinking baseball terminology. Wouldn't it be great to know?

I don't have much insight, but here are my admittedly uber-newbie preferences...

*Scapes that don't flop. Floppy plants in general annoy me.
*Spider blooms
*Frilly blooms
*Purple, pink, cream/white or cool yellow blooms. Usually.
*Strong foliage that doesn't look ratty.
*Miniatures and super tall daylilies. I've been eyeballing a couple of tall ones at Plant Delights.

I am always surprised more people don't consider the foliage when choosing daylilies!

A few years ago, foliage wasn't important to me, but I've noticed it more lately. I haven't decided if I like the thinner or wider, floppy or upright. Sometimes they look like corn stalks to me.

I choose my daylilies mostly because I like the names. I have 21 Star Trek daylilies and I favor humorous names. I love names like A Moose Fishing On A Pond On Monday Morning. Other favorite names are Now And Zen, Purple Pyrotechnics, LindyTwirl, Notify Ground Crew, and the Tribble With Blue. The names make me laugh. I buy some because they have names of family members. I bought some with Oz names because I have a friend who collects Wizard of Oz stuff. I have in mind to make a solar garden but I can't find some daylilies with planet names. Guess I will have to hybridize and name one Klingons Around Uranus.

But if you like foliage, get White Stripe. The leaves have a white stripe, at least when they are new.

I've moved from purchasing from the hybridizers because their plants are usually more expensive. That means that if the plant fails to thrive, I'm out big bucks. Now, the Lily Auction gets most of my money.

I really don't have a preference so far for foliage shape, or even color, well I do prefer the darker greens. I just would love all my daylilies to not have yellow streaks or brown tips, and look shiny and green, just good healthy looking foliage.

I used to be attracted to all the new ones because, after all, they had to be better, right? Now that Ive been into daylilies for 10 years or so, theres far fewer new ones that interest me. Just not that much different. I love yellows...but really, how many do you need? I find myself now buying some older ones, and am attracted to a full clump with gobs of blooms. Im buying a few now, and thinking I will probably produce some seeds this year for my own enjoyment, especially because I can get from seed to bloom so quickly here.

Probably Im mostly drawn to big fluffy round blooms. Love well branched plants; blooms shoved together is a no no for me. Love strong foliage too.

ocalagal,
Thanks for bringing up the "full clump with gobs of blooms issue". Yes, how could we have overlooked that. That is certainly a feature I would love to have with the daylilies in my garden. I have some that that have been there three years and still have not formed a decent clump. The photos I prefer often in the data base are the ones of clumps full of blooms.
