Boo-Hoo Margaret my seedling Monkshood from the seeds you sent did not make it thru the 112 F and drought here. Crying What a shock, I just checked in the refrigerator where I still had some more of your seeds and several Monkshood have sprouted in the bag !!! They truly must love the cold. Thumbs up

Steph, your Delphs are just opening? Mine have been done for a week or two already........I'm coming to Montana!

Margaret, I remember reading they do like cold snowy winters, the article said in the Yukon they grow to "towering heights".........how I would love to see that!

I have Monkshood too -- it's a dark purple one!! It's about the last thing to bloom in my garden. I dont have a picture of it blooming but I have a picture of it thriving in the garden in early September. See the attached garden shot and click on it to open -- see in the bottom left hand corner a portion of that tall "bush-like" plant? That is the Monkshood. (I really need to move it cause it blocks my garden view -- LOL!!!

I also have Turtlehead -- a pink one -- it grows great in dappled sun and bloom late as well. Have it right mixed in with the Hostas.

Steph, I'm in the Toronto Area, for me the delph usuallu bloom mid June so they were actually a bit late this year! But if I cut them down they will usually bloom again in the fall, less showy but its still nice to see them again. Smiling

Steven I never tried cutting them down. Do you really feed them to get them to bloom again. Our season is so short some years I would be leary to let them rebloom as they may get to weak to make it through the winter.

I have tried cutting them down and never found it very successful even when I lived in warmer areas such as Vancouver Island.

Asiatic and LA hybrid lilies, and dianthus bloom for me in that time and don't forget the hardy roses. Mordens and minis don't take up much space and are ever bloomers. 'Madame Julia Corravon' is an everblooming clemmie and the hardy honeysuckles are good for vines. Gaillardia 'Goblin' is one of my favs at this time and the salvias are usually still performing. Lychnis coranaria 'Rose Campion' too (although that lychnis might be invasive in some of your areas). Delphs and daisys are a must have for me.
