Pat, have your scapes survived the cold? I cut the scapes from earlier this month and last month because I didn't think they would perform as they should. Hoping to keep the plant from expending unnecessary energy this early in the year. Usually I have the first bloom by about the third week of March. If the weather improves, hopefully we'll be back on schedule. Good luck!

I haven't done anything to the scapes.
They are still trooping along and it is supposed to go down to 29 degrees tonight.
There are 4 different plants out there with scapes; don't know what got them so excited.

Only 29? Wow. We're a good 25 miles further south than you and expecting a low of 23. I haven't looked for scapes this year, as yet. Never even thought about doing it this early.

Keep warm.

I checked some of our earliest blooming cultivars today, but can't find any evidence of scaping.

I don't think it got quite as cold last night as was predicted. Weather Underground showed a reading of 25 about a mile down the road from us at 7am, but here on our hill, the faucet I left dripping was still dripping at 7 am (no ice at all). On the other hand, our nine mulberry trees, which were full of new growth and berries were devastated. Leaves and new berries burnt to a crisp, just like it happened to years ago.

I wonder why scientists haven't come up with a way to make trees remain dormant, once they go dormant naturally. That would be a godsend around here.

Here's pudgie with scapes the first week of february. Will abort them, as they most likely will not bloom properly. Could have a few freezes this coming week too.

Wow DG, the scapes are taller than the foliage.

Saw another scape out there today.
That makes 5 different plants with scapes.
It got down to 29 degrees here a day or so ago, supposed to be up around 80 tomorrow.

Cold didn't seem to bother the scapes.
