This green flowered beauty I found living in the rainforest (Paraty-Brazil) on tree branches, my knowledge of orchids is near to non-extisting, so i even wouldn't know to what orchid family it could belong..
Hopefully someone over here knows more..

Ok done. I posted it on my page and shared it to the AOS group.

The first reply says that the picture of the blooms are that of a Catasetum and the plant looks like a Mormodes. We are looking at two different Orchids.

There are 8 species of Catasetum in the area according to the Flora do Brasil;
I think mine must be catasetum globiflorum.
Mormodes species don't occur in the area..
The plant photo is indeed from another orchid in the same place, but I believe the same species, the thin leaves with the pronounced nerves and the thickened base did look exactly like that one which was blooming but I somehow forgot to take pictures of its leaves..

- Catasetum cernuum
- Catasetum discolor
- Catasetum globiflorum
- Catasetum hookeri

- Catasetum socco

None of them fits..

I checked out the usual sources last night Myriam, although I only went through some of those in Orchidaceae for Rio de Janeiro, it was a long list.

Catasetum socco comes close but not quite right ..

None of the 8 occuring species Catasetum in the Rio state seem to match..

I have looked at all of them too yesterday. I was wondering, is it possible that these pictures were taken closer to someone's house?

The orchids were located by the river, there are no houses over there..

Hmm, there goes that thought. I was thinking that perhaps someone's Orchids got established nearby......

I think there must be some variation in the species Myriam, often 'subspecies' have slight differences according to region. Catasetum socco still looks possible to me .. the flowers will look a little different as they open out more and age.

I think you're right Janet, the images of Catasetum socco on the web all look a bit different, so mine could be another variety of the same species ans also looking different in the stage of opening of the flowers, I think I'll mark it as solved!

I'm going through your old ID posts Myriam. The orchid plant without flowers looks the same as one you had before which we thought was Pabstia viridis, you can see the deeply ridged pseudobulbs ..

Yes, it has a lot of similarity, but the plant growing on the rock I remember looked more sturdy and much bigger, but that doesn't say much maybe as it could have been a much older plant..
The foliage of the blooming one really did look like the non-flowering, but out of prudence I better leave it out when submitting to the database..

I hope you don't mind me saying so, but are you sure you feel confident that the id is correct? Now if that were me, I would be reluctant to enter the plant into the database. A possibility is not an id?

I understand your reluctance Ursual. But, as this is not a hybrid which we know can display features from other species, then in my unprofessional opinion it would have to display a very near likeness to other species located in the region.

As we have a list of the species found in Rio de Janeiro state, then we should be fairly confident it will be the one which looks most like it. I have searched several of the other genera found there, but not all, which is something I can do in order to come to the most likely conclusion. If I can do that, then it becomes a game of elimination.
