Two term's for "N" this morning...

Nocturnal, refers to daylilies that begin to open their blooms in the late afternoon or evening. The blooms will then close later the next day. On the nocturnal cultivars I grow the blooms do well throughout the day, most lasting until early evening before closing. If you live head your garden in the evening, as I do, knowing which cultivars are nocturnal helps. Otherwise, the newly opening blooms and the older closing blooms tend to look alike and you can easily pick off the next days flowers. (been there, done that )A few registered nocturnals that I grow are...





Second term is near-white.

"N" for Nitrogen,
I was told for years not to feed daylilies much nitrogen, "You'll only get leaves" I was told. Now I read more and more about really loading up on nitrogen. I am amazed when I read about how much fertilizer some of the growers feed their plants. Milorganite, Alfalfa meal, even high nitrogen lawn fertilizer! How could growers have been deceived so long about the benefits of nitrogen for daylilies? Mine however do not get all that much nitrogen, but I am gradually coming over to adding more, but I am taking a slow approach mainly due to the very high cost of all those fertilizers.

NEW to my garden, daylilies that have been added to my garden that I have not seen in bloom.

I add alfalfa pellets to my garden most years it is not what I consider expensive in our area. I just purchase it at a farm store just make sure it contains no salt. The pellets do not attract rabbits and break down fast when it rains, they make a difference in the growth of my plants.

Nocturnals, in my experience, can be difficult to place in the garden; you don't want the nocturnal closing up and/or melting apart in the afternoon, when the nearby diurnals are still fresh. It just looks bad. You almost have to put them in some out-of-the-way location not near any of the diurnal daylilies, so they don't suffer from a visual comparison. Yet, because you want to enjoy them, you need to put them somewhere you will be sure to pass (or stumble) by them in the evening. (I have some vague recollection, which could be totally wrong, of something I once read... that EMOs have nocturnal genes somewhere in the background. EMOs, at least if they are also CMOs.)

For "my" N, I am tempted to put Need. Don't we all always think we need this or that (usually new and $) daylily?

But in reality, I think that is really a Want... though I do believe that every temperate garden, no matter how small, needs at least one yellow daylily - because they are so cheerful.

I do love the near whites! They are so pretty.

Nocturnals- How these are used in the garden may depend on your morning temps. Here in zone 5 or 6 we tend to have cool mornings and if one wants to see their blooms-say before heading to work?- you would have to plant nocturnals or the cool temps slow them from opening and it may be nearly 10 am before it is open fully. By the time you get home in the later afternoon or early evening they have already started to go down hill because of the heat.

Wow Mike. Your Double Old Ivory looks so much better than mine. Have you had it a long time??

Cindy I got mine from Doris (Casshigh) a few years ago. I want to say about 2012 when she had a classified sale on DG. I made out like a bandit with a lot of my earlier near whites coming from her. I have seen your pics of yours. Yours look good to me also.
