Love the hover and the hover shadow! I'm afraid I wasn't able to get a real sharp focus for close-up on mine, but I was so impressed with the sheer size of this bee, I just had to share anyway.

That is one huge (bumblebee?) clearly visible from a distance on my May Night salvia!!

It is Godzilla bee!!

Well, I think this bee was *queen* size, but does the queen actually go out and forage in the blossoms? Doesn't she lounge around in the bee homestead, producing large quantities of eggs?

so then it would stand to reason that it would kinda have to be a new queen at this time of year, since they are the only ones surviving the winter to start new colonies--very cool

thanks, Ann and Dirt! That is very interesting ! I love the idea of a new queen bumblebee foraging in my salvia, getting ready to build a nest somewhere in my yard!

Hopefully I will see many of her offspring collecting pollen later in the season!
