I heard someone talking about the SunHosta http://www.sunhosta.com/pictur... a year or so ago and couldn't believe there was a Hosta that would do well in the hot Florida sun. I have yet to see them for sale anywhere here in my area but according to the news section at their site http://www.sunhosta.com/news they will be available throughout Florida at HD, Lowe's and Walmart next month! Hurray! I will certainly be on the lookout for them!

I have been growing Sun Hosta for four years In Eustis, FL. I bought several of them in Walmart and they have had them for sale every year for the last four. I have some of them Under my Live Oaks and some in a sunnier location. They seem to like the shaded area the best. They have bloomed every year, some even in the winter. They are not large plants as the ones I have seen in the north, but they are growing and multiplying. I also have a solid green Hosta which I bought at the Walmart at the same time as the Sun Hosta that is doing just as well. It did not have a tag with the variety. Wish it did, if I knew the variety I would buy more.

Hi and welcome. This seems like a good time of year for you to try out the Sun Hostas. With the weather cooling, they will have all winter to get established for you, before the onslaught of summer next year. I'd certainly look for the coolest spot you can find for them.

I've thought of trying them out here, on the north side of my house where they'd be as cold as it gets, all winter for a little bit of dormancy. So be sure to keep us posted on how they do for you. Pictures are always welcome, and a good comparison on progress.

@Hostafan, Welcome!
I purchased four Sun Hostas a few years back, they are all still living. Give them plenty of water, and if you have any shade take advantage of it. The hosta seem to be able to live here, but they do better out of the direct sun.

My Sun Hosta seems to have enjoyed the Summer here in a part sun location.

I've seen the Sun Hostas for sale before, I think at Lowes, but was afraid to try them. Nice to know they do well, I'll keep an eye out.

Just a update: It still looks good in the garden and I think I will be adding more this year.

It's really looking great, but no sign of it dying back and going dormant even with this cold weather, Scott? Every Hosta I've ever seen dies right back to the ground in winter, and pops up bigger and better in the spring.

I am impressed and envious, they do not grow here because of our humidity. They will live for a bit in containers but they hate being in ground. Just 15 miles away on higher and dryer ground they do nicely.

Amazing! Maybe this variety doesn't need a dormant period. Shrug!

Keep us posted. If it does well again through this spring and summer, I'm going to try some.

Elaine, I am also amazed by Sun Hosta. This one saw a low of 27F with 6 hrs below 32f. No damaged was noticed to leaves from the freeze. New growth is now emerging and last years growth now looks to be fading.

Scot, I just bought a 'Sun Hosta' at Lukas nursery. Can you tell me if you have yours in sun or shade? Looks like you have yours in the ground also. Appreciate any tips, since I can't really find anything on the internet.

Sherri, I have my Sun Hosta in a location that receives about 6 hrs mid day sun in the garden. When I searched for best location on the net, it was said to tolerate full sun but performs best in part sun in south Florida.

I noticed that in the photos only after posting . This bright hot sun must be reflecting off the flowers. I will get a photo when sun gets off the plants.

Those are probably heat waves radiating off the flowers. What a week!
