This is an area of the garden that some times hits me as a disaster,, but the lilies bloom for such a short time that I choice to ignore it. Other times I sort of like it.

To me, the barberries tie them all in together quite well. I'd be happy to have it!

Silver, lime or purplish foliage plants can sometimes help to neutralize odd placed colors.

I'm thinking about getting some gold barberries to go by my winterberries out front. It would look good against the red berries. I'm kind of worried about the thorns after what I went through with that rose thorn in my finger. I need to look into some shrubs with orange and gold winter color.

Barberries are lovely, but they can be dangerous for those of us who are a bit klutzy. I got some great gloves that go up to my elbows that I wear when pruning them. But I just love the colors they produce...nothing else like them. Although there might be some viburnum in the color range you want, Clint.
Susan, I just complimented your lilies in the what's blooming thread...I think that area looks very pretty. Sometimes don't you just like a riot of color? Throw another purple thing in there and you'll have it all!

Jeanie - I used gloves with my roses, but they got me through the glove! I still can't bend my finger all the way. The Doctor said they couldn't do anything and it would have to heal on its own. It's been over three weeks. Those Knockout Roses are dangerous. I believe they could make you lose a finger if you aren't careful. I have chopped all of mine to the ground!

Oh yeah, Knock Out roses are very thorny.
I wonder if roses are worse than barberries because the thorns are curved?I have poked a couple holes in my fingers from the barberries, but nothing serious ever came of it.

I think there is some kind of fungus on the thorns of those roses that is dangerous. I read something about it. I'll try to find it. I was on antibiotics for two weeks.

Thats scary! - I just planted my very first roses this spring - 7 of them. It will be long sleeves and gloves.

This is a combination that has got to be changed - when you plant new iris in the fall, and forget what is what, and then plant new lilies in the spring, and forget what is what……………….

I'm not overly fond of yellow and gray together, even tho it occurs naturally often.

I enjoy soft yellow with gray but I'm not thrilled with gold and gray. Then again, anyone can tempt me with a good photo that I'll love.

So Dirt and I went to the nursery last night to pick up a couple of things we absolutely needed and look around at potential solutions to the color disaster problem (I think hot-pink penstemon tetris is the answer, but what do I know?)...and...

While we were at the nursery, we met a really, really tiny guy who had apparently been born in one of the sheds and recently abandoned. He was being exceptionally cute and gregarious and endearing....so...he found his way home with us. He's called Fletcher and he talks a lot but seems to be happy on his new lap. And I'm sure he'll enjoy the grand, luxury litterboxes that are Dirt's many gardens.

So the color disaster remains...but incremental progress was made in that the orange cat found his way to us. Here he is:
