>>>"English Peas, those little green, china balls that they make split pea soup out of, plus sugar snap peas, and snow peas."

Must be a Texas thing then cus around here "green peas" are "garden peas" or "English peas". The ones that need shelling

Sugar snaps are "sugar snaps". Eat the pod and all.
Snow peas are "snow pea". Harvested when pods are flat and no peas are filling out yet.

Neither would be called green peas. Lordy, folks around here would be in an uproar if someone brought home the latter two when the cook wanted the first one. :>)

I guess ya'll go by the color of the pod and not the other factors, eh?

Now about those cream peas and kidney beans...I like 'em both! Do you fix them together in the same pot?

Shoe (Don't worry folks, kidney beans are beans and not a southern pea nor a green pea. We're just getting excited here talking about food!)

Howdy, Melissa!

Yeh, I'm big on kidney beans, too. I think pinto beans are my most favorite beans though, but heck, you cant make chili w/out kidney beans, right?
(I guess Trish will have to do a separate "bean" quiz sometime.)

Hope all is going well in Ohio.

Bunch of yanks on here! Smiling And you southerners forgot 2 of my favorite which are white acre peas & field peas with snaps in them.
See, mom was from Al.& dad was from Wi. so I love ALL peas; southern & green peas as well as sugar snaps & snow peas. Eat any of them fresh while pickin' or any of them cooked. The southern peas must have "fat back" cooked in with them or they AIN"T southern peas! Oh, and then you can dip or crumble your cornbread up in the juice & eat that with a spoon just like when you do greens.
In the heat of the south the green peas have to be timed just right or you won't get any peas. I think that's why we southerners eat/grow so many other kinds of peas which are not as persnickity as to the heat.
Not growing anything right now being in between permanent homes & gardens. I have gardening withdrawal BAD! Crying

Ok, then where do black eyed peas fit? They look like beans to me.

Southern peas. Yeh, I can see where they look like beans to people.

Teritorial Seed Co (Oregon) has them listed in the bean section but calls them peas in the discriptive text. Latin names vary between some of the bean types. Peas don't match the latin for their California Blackeye 46 (Vigna unguiculata) and the blackeye variety latin doesn't match either. No wonder I'm Confused

Ann- I completely understand that withdrawl!! We were garden-less for 3 years- quite a bit longer than we intended to be! It was horrible, but even still we did manage to do a little bit just because I think we would have gone mad otherwise.

Rolling on the floor laughing I find myself walking through parking lots & seeing a weed in one of the landscaped areas they have & I swear I have bent over & started to pull it! It's THAT bad. Or walking the dog & I see some weeds in someone's flowers & I have caught myself (luckily) before I walk in their yard & weed the flower bed. Although they would no doubt think I've gone completely whacko they would probablly be thankful I did it. Hilarious!

Very impressive, Charlie!! I've never grown the Red Ripper variety, but I may just have to be on the lookout for a trial!!
