I think that Linnea is saying that if the fungicide is a bacterial based product the bleach will kill the bacteria in it.

But if the bleach is poured on the soil it won't affect the fungicide at all, since is sprayed on the plant above.

Greg -- I don't know how I missed your post that Cleta quoted above -- but I'm sick at heart to read all of your losses. And especially since three of those were cultivars that I sent you just this year. Sad

I should be able to replace them next year -- and I say *should* because I transplanted two of those cultivars this fall (actually, they're both out of the ground at this moment) and for the past two years I haven't been able to count on success in transplanting. Very frustrating. But if things go well, I should have some to share.

I checked on 3 historics that a neighborhood lady gave me and they're a bust. One fell apart in my hands when I gave a tug. Glare Good thing they have more.

I gave up posting all those that did not make the move for one reason or another but found another on walkabout with several looking pretty questionable, but several near goners are showing their little fingers so some good news. I do have 2-3 raspberry bushes that did make it! Moved 7 though.

I found a weird one today. I was transplanting Immortality from the temp bed next to the garage, to a good spot in Iris Lane. When I dug it up, I saw that one rhizome still had its bloom stalk on it (all dried up and laying on the ground behind the clump), and it had two nice-sized increases on either side of the mother rhizome -- but the mother rhizome was rotted down to the rhizome on the center leaves only. The outside leaves of the mother rhizome were just fine. What do you think about that?

Some really weird things going on this year................ Sticking tongue out

We always cut stalks after bloom, because they often lead to rot.

I don't even remember seeing it bloom, Lucy. Shrug! I always cut stalks too -- mostly because they're just ugly once the blooms are off. But on those occasions when I've been late in doing so, the stalks just dry off. I've never seen this happen before. Like I said -- it's been a weird year.

So, I'm trying to wrap my head around all this iris loss. Is it all rot?
I hesitate to tempt the gods by saying this, but I haven't seen any rot
in my garden. It could be that rot happens under wet conditions?
We're dry here.
I have an iris, Revved Up Rose, a dwarf, that is showing no green and
is very dry. I've tried to give it extra water, but it isn't looking good.
However, I've had several that looked wonky, but once established, are
now sending up tiny flags. Hoping to be able to share extras with those
of you who have lost so many.

edit:correction - Revved up Rose is an intermediate.

Jan - wet conditions can help promote the rot since it gives the bacteria/virus (depends on kind of rot) a warm humid environment to grow in. Now I believe that newly planted iris can be more susceptible because they have already undergone the shock of being dug up and moved, and in most cases have been moved to new climates as well. That said, while I have had some rot this year, I have only completely lost four new rhizomes. The rest have been able to be treated and are growing new fans. Four out of over 250 is pretty good. I would like it to be zero out of 250, but we had a very wet time during planting.

As for Revved Up Rose, I would consider digging it up and soaking the roots in water for a few days (this also gives you a chance to check out the rhizome), then possibly putting it in a pot, or someplace where you can give it a bit more water and keep an eye on it. I had a couple of dwarfs and intermediates that looked to be goners, but extra water and care has rejuvenated them.
