I just received a Cinco de Mayo rose for my birthday. I'm a little concerned about its hardiness. As I look at different web sites it seems it does best in zones 6 - 9. I'm in zone 5. Do you have any tips that will help me to keep this rose through our cold winters?

Thank you!
Susan

Our database shows optimal zones 6 and warmer for Floribunda Rose (Rosa 'Cinco de Mayo') but maybe with heavy mulching it would be okay in your zone. I noticed a couple of ATP members who are in zones 5a & 5b have photos in the database of this beautiful rose so maybe they can offer advice.

This rose is a really tough little plant. I did heavy mulch and burlap wrap the first winter, but I've done nothing at all for winter protection since then. Almost all of my roses, including this one, suffer winter die-back anyway, no matter what, but this one bounces back quickly after a late winter/early spring trim. Smiling

FYI Lin, no one by that 3rd name you summoned . nodding
And she took her shot at the Denver Botanic Gardens as her caption states. At least Sue knows it can survive in colder zones! Thumbs up

sorry, not on ATP much. Cinco de Mayo is a wonderful rose and survives for me quite well with almost minimal mulching (about 4-6"). Of course i get winterkill down to the mulch every year, but you shouldnt' have any problems with it at all.

Cinco de Mayo died back to the ground here last winter, so I purchased a 2nd one. Now I have 2, side by side. It took a while to recharge! Well worth having, even if you have to mulch it. I'm zone 6/7, last winter was a 6, and it followed a horrible hot droughty summer.

I also got my Cinco de Mayo last week. Hope it will survive here. Love the color. New leafs have nice redish color too.

I have mine in the ground. It looks good. Let's hope for a mild winter. At least for its first year.
