Still working in my garden renovation project so there are pots of plants all over. Little by little each plant is finding a home. Look what I disturbed while moving some pots today; poor little thing was trying to sleep in my pot ghetto. Oh, I was wearing the gauntlet glove because I was pulling out brambles; not to protect myself from the harmless little snake.

Northern Scarlet Snake (Cemophora coccinea copei)

In this photo you can see the snake has a red upturned snout and a white underbelly which helps to identify it as a Scarlet Snake and not a Milk Snake or Scarlet King Snake. After the photos I released the snake in an area not scheduled for renovation this season.

Such pretty snakes!

Thank You! This is the second time I have found this type of snake. When I see this snake I jump back, check the stripes and the underbelly, and then exhale. Sighing! This snake may eat my Anole lizard eggs but it is a friendly snake and harmless to humans.

I moved here 14 years ago.
In the first few weeks I found a Black Widow spider and a baby Copperhead snake. Savannah is a pretty laid-back kind of place, but it helps to wear shoes and watch your step around here. Rolling on the floor laughing

My crazy husband is always trying to see what the color on the tip of the nose is and I keep telling him who cares what color the tip of the nose is, it's the combination of the stripes that's important. Just learn the little ditty. Rolling my eyes.

The distortion of that is that Banded King Snakes , and Coral Snakes , can happen as all red ,all yellow , all Black or several variations ,
I once saw an all Black 8 inch coral snake , at a southern Georgia reptile zoo , may of been northern Florida , long while ago ,
I have a few snake stories from a few places Hilarious!

Hilarious! Living on the west coast all my life, I would panic if I saw one of those brightly colored snakes. I can id rattlers by the shape of their head, and we do have 1 small banded desert snake , but just yellow and black. I would never make it in the SE...too many poisonous critters.

Yupper!

Ain't he a cool dude!
The cats pointed him out....
Took them back to the house so the snake could go his way in peace.

ctcarol said:I can't see his head so I don't know.

Don't need to see the head...
The colours and the width of the body give him away....

Also....
The rattles were in view.

You know...
Snakes generally stay in the area where they live... So... After a while you realize that you're seeing the same snakes over and over...

Anyway... Here's a picture from last September....

Yes...
And sounds different, too.

Last summer, when the cats had him surrounded, he was just abuzzin'. Sounded like a cicada... Except it was all a single frequency.

Let me know I wasn't hearing a cicada as I walked in from the garden...
The cicada notes rise and fall. Rattle snake buzz was all one pitch.

Higher and faster than the western diamondback.
