I thought one club member was going to be clobbered when she said she got rid of Ruby Spider, lol! WHY??? She said she just wanted something different Smiling

Lol, Ruby Spider is one of my top two favorites. If I ever got rid of her, it would probably be because she was TOO beautiful and was stealing the show wherever I put her!

I really, really, really like new daylilies. That said, there are a number of reasons I purchase off the Daylily Auction. I don't exactly trust the statistics provided by some hybridizers nor do I trust their pictures. If the lineage of the daylily is presented as "unknown x unknown" or "XXX x sdlg" I can't make a reasonable judgement if that plant will grow in my near-tropical garden (we haven't had a freeze in 8 yr). So, I look at the ATP database to see who grows whatever plant I'm contemplating, and then spend no more than 50% of the hybridizer's current price. If the plant doesn't thrive, I'm not out a couple hundred dollars, and if it does grow, maybe it looks good and maybe it doesn't.

I probably lost about $6,000 (I quit counting after reaching that #) from 2005-2010 paying for plants from growers when the plant wouldn't survive 12 months. Even when the growers live in the same county, but they are far inland and I'm on the coast. About 2010 I started using the Auction and purchasing only newer daylilies. Since then, my losses have been minimized and friends who live north of me have profited when a plant didn't thrive here. I'm not out much and they enjoy the plants, so it's a win-win for both of us.

The auction was kind to me this weekend. All from Tink, here's what I got:

Memory of Morning, Lambertson 2012
Starburst Fantasy, Trimmer 2013
Waves of Joy, Trimmer 2013
Hazel Tinsley, Morss 2012

Not the very latest and greatest but some really good buys of beautiful daylilies. I saw Waves of Joy in Trimmer's greenhouse 3 yr ago. He was a proud papa.

Leslie, I have a cyber friend in Texas that I got hooked on daylilies. She is so nice--she sends cash to reimburses mail costs! Anyway, we stay in touch all year and I send her what leaves the garden. She is happy with almost anything, although I always send her pics. I can have no more than 80 daylilies. I think I'll be at about 75 by the time December arrives. Sometimes I trade with people, but usually not.

Teresa, her auction name is Tink3472. I don't think she has listed any new ones--she had a LOT that finished Sat and Sun so she is busy. I order from her because she can easily send plants to me when I need them because we are both in Florida. So I asked that she send the plants the last week of October. That's a no-go for most sellers, but Tink always comes through.

Woohoo! I'm getting plants from Dan Hansen next week. I couldn't narrow down what I wanted so I sent him a "Chinese menu" with the plants I'm interested in divided into 3 categories: Doubles, Blues and Patterns. I asked him to take the money I sent and choose something from each category. Of course the ones I listed on my wish list here were included. I'll let you know what he sends.

I have to report that since this thread started my wish list has changed a couple of times! Hilarious!

A very nice ATP member offered me a fantastic deal that would have given me 3 of the 5 on my list at the time. It was so difficult but I turned it down. We still had school shopping to finish and was I really sure I wanted those daylilies since I am short on space. But it was a good thing I passed.

Only 2 that were on the initial list remain.
Blazing Saddles & Fighting Fire

These 3 replaced others on the list.

My wish list seems to contain....
I wish I had the money some cost,
I wish I had the space for them,
I wish I the time for them.
I of course have a wish list that someday I might get to fill, but I also have received gift daylilies that I may have never thought to purchase but have become some of the all around most beautiful that I have. Two gifted plants were Northern Giant and Never been Kissed. I as I am sure many gardeners like the plants that yell at you and want to bite your face off. And yet these ones mentioned along with many others just sit in their assigned plot of earth and quietly present their inherent loveliness.
In truth many of these flowers have changed how I look at them.
