I went out into the heat yesterday to get a picture of this. (It was worth it.) The flowers only open in the afternoon.

I have seen 'hedges' of Limelight used, in pictures, but in areas with large trees and a lot of green of other vegetation to set it off, but this is just so featureless, has zero impact. I suppose for reasons, view, neighbors, etc. that they didn't want something tall, but I would rather see any type of tall hedge if they were going to be using only one plant as the featured hedge.. There are just so many ways they could have gone with that and that's what they came up with...really?

Of course, I should not be so critical...lol...here I am on this tiny lot and I'm cramming in everything possible and I'm sure there will be people looking at this and, likewise, saying...REALLY?

I usually do not do any type of foundation planting since we will always need to get at things on the house, painintg, tearing a wall out, etc...but I have so many things to plant and so little room..today I'm trying to see where I can squeeze in romneya and dierama...they both need to get into the ground NOW...I think I need to dig out more sod....sigh...or see what and where I can plant against the house...things that would not mind being disturbed if having to be moved att a moment's notice...
I could be wrong...

I here you about planting anything close to the house. We just did a remodel on the south end of the house. I been moving plants since early February. Mostly have them back in place and 3 new trellis for growing clems. Now it's time to paint the fence, that will be fun. Can here my DH now, thank god it's raining today so one more day for me. I do like to follow your planting of your new yard, going to be fabulous.

Our house has mostly concrete (porches and sidewalks) right around the perimeter, except the south side, which is a jungle of lantana and bird of paradise. It looks good and would discourage anyone from trying to break in through those windows but it will be a bear if we ever restucco. (DH wants to restucco. I'd rather save the money for a new roof.)

Julia...I really don't think it's going to be fabulous..it will have to keep changing and will really have no true character until the trees get large. I can not plant it to have the right "Look"...I can only try to squeeze in everything I feel I have to have....

When we were moving, I gave away truckloads of plants and one of my friends had just divorced, sold the 6 acre property and bought a newly built house on a tiny lot...as something she would be able to maintain and as a good investment....and she was used to having a lot of land to work with....and I kept taking her loads of plants...and then I'd go see what she'd done with them...lol...I could hear myself keep saying, "You do know how large that is going to get, right?"

hahaha...yes, my 'patch' in FB was HUGE, HUGE, HUGE. I learned how really tough it is when I mentioned to Jer that it all needed to be cut back and I hadn't had time....I came home from work and he had somehow heard that as needs to be 'dug out', which is what he'd proceeded to do.....and I cried....and it ALL CAME BACK....

Which is part of my big problem here now....I need to grow romneya...and where can I put it?

The Princess Flowers are blooming everywhere, guess I will also need to see where I can plant one of those...cuz, how could I NOT?

This house was white with a red door and I really liked it...then they painted it and I didn't like it, but am learning to because they took the color of the Princess flower into consideration and I'm now liking it...this is not a good pic...but they were home and I was waiting for them to come out and ask me what I was doing...lol..

This sweet, sweet little MG! Had the seeds given to me as just "yellow MG", so you know what I imagined...what a surprise...haven't got a clue where to plant this...obviously small scale.

And Look! The first bloom on one of the echium "Tajinaste" out in front...now I'll be able to see if I like that blue out there or not.

A veronica, I need to collect seed and do a lot more of these...I bought two small pots and think I want a lot of this as fillers.

Not 'flowering', but I'm really happy with the way it's coming along after being stuck in a pot for two years....stipa gigantea, I can't wait for it to get big.

Hey, Strever! How are you? You need to come and talk to us more often....I do have a pot of yellow crocosmia un-named that came from Rebecca's and I need to get them into the ground....I like the ones you have there.

Yes, on the orange crocosmias...then is that crocosmia x crocosmiiflora that I have here and am seeing everywhere? Yes, they're common and pulled and tossed a lot...I still like them. Maybe I mentioned earlier that when we went to the 'dump' last week, there was a whole pile that had been tossed and I grabbed them for my neighbor. I gave her a clump last year and she wanted more...convenient. I cannot stand the chasmanthes, but I do like these. Last year I thought I would pull the ones here by the house, but we're not working close to the hose there yet and they're still there and I 'm glad.....I will use them elsewhere when I do pull them.

I like acanthus mollis, but have not planted them...I was a bit concerned with the idea that they spread too aggresiviely and are then hard to remove..I pooh pooh'd that until there was a property here that I wanted and the acanthus had really taken over.

By the pic, I can see that you have some trees there and I remember the large one that fell across your house...wonderful...I have a small city lot now with no trees and the place is not going to please me at all until I get some trees grown.

You're farther inland a bit, right? Can you grow fuyu persimmons there by any chance? I REALLY miss those and would almost consider moving over by you if I could grow my 'simmons...lol..are you being affected by the fires?

the trees you see in the acanthus pict are cherry trees and we only get a hand full after the blue jays find them each year
i don't think i have enuff sun to grow persimmons, i'm 6 miles from the ocean just about the fog line
two apple trees have done zero here and need to be taken out
my son took his small lemon trees out of my green house and they are doing better in town at his place
i have picked up a variegated acanthus and want to try it next to the pond where the old ones have been growing for the last 15 years
i will try to come by here more often

Echinopsis 'Los Angeles' is blooming for the third time this year. I've never had it bloom more than once a year before.

I'm not bothering with fruit trees other than my Meyer which is in my small fenced in area...with my blueberries. I don't have room to plant fruit trees that would not be productive or the critters would eat. I'm doing strawberries in containers, likewise in my fenced "pig pen". I've not seen a variegated acanthus before. The new nursery in Brookings has variegated eucryphia and I was tempted, but I have some variegated items and maybe don't have room for that much 'splash'. Rebecca is trying to get him interested in bringing in the more unusual stuff...we'll see.

The only fruit trees I really miss are my persimmons and avocados....sigh..

Good to hear from you......
