In the very early spring and fall I use a 6-10-10 Pennington granular fertilizer that I get at WalMart for less than $3 a box. But it's a seasonal item, so you have to get it when you see it. Don't know if they would have any left now, but after Christmas they should bring it out again so you could use it in the spring. I buy a whole bunch of boxes each year, and I'm usually finished purchasing by August. If you can't get it at WalMart just look for any 6-10-10 or 5-10-10 (nitrogen -- first number -- should be a low number), something like that. And I know the hybridizer Joe Ghio recommends a 10-10-10 granular. I've also purchased a 5-10-10 at Orchard Supply, but it costs twice as much as the Pennington at WalMart.

And this last spring I also sprayed MiracleGro on all the plants as a boost, and it really worked. The problem is that most people don't have a lot of rebloomers, and you shouldn't fertilize all the rest in the summer because of bacterial soft rot -- when it's cooler is best. Maybe you could just use a watering can and pour MiracleGro on the rebloomers only right after they bloom each time. And some rebloomers will rebloom more than once in a year. I just discovered a blooming stalk on PLEASANT PEASANT, and I haven't fertilized it since March. And it's actually rebloomed for me two to three times a year. I expect to have blooms on it again probably in October.

Oh *yay* - that's one of my faves. I'll try it on that one, first!

Oh wait - is there a Pleasant Peasant as well as a Pleasant Pheasant? I have the bird, lol...

Oh geez - ignore me. It's Pheasant Feathers, not Pleasant Pheasant. Dum de dum dum.... Whistling

In the end, only kindness matters.

Science is not the answer, it is the question.

I really do feel lucky about Twiggi. It was trimmed and sent to me as a new plant.
I heard the established rebloomers wont rebloom unless they are cut back after the first spring bloom.
I hope to see it next spring as well as next summer but doubt it.
Talk is this area has too fierce winters.
Its all a guess but I am definatly enjoying this.

Enjoys or suffers cold winters
It is not the winters themselves, but the onset of winter which would bother reblooming irises. An IB iris, Champagne Encore (Aitken) reblooms very well. Alghough shorter than a TB it bloomed well into the fall on its 3rd yr in northern Ohio. Even Immortality is difficult to settle in, but once accustomed to a new place does extremely well in the north.

Love that sedum, and that Glamini Gladiola is to die for! Now crepe myrtles we do have. I have five different ones, all bushes, although the trees are really popular here. They've been blooming pretty much all summer, and I never thought to take a picture... Oh well, maybe next year when they're at their best.

My Crepe Myrtle is the shrub form, no room here for trees. I really thought it was too cold here in the winter for Crepe Myrtles but I have had this one for almost ten years so it is thriving here. I never had one before this.

Fall really is the time for the Sedum. It is my best fall bloomer and I have them (various kinds) all around the garden. Honeybees and Bumblebess both love them.

On garden topic but off topic of iris. Dave has added some generic features to the database. Many of you might know I have lots of roses. So besides each variety of rose Dave put it just the generic "rose" for pictures of masses of roses or no id roses. So last night I put in a ton of mases of rose bed pictures. My favorite way to take pictures of roses, not extreme closeups but just a riot of jumbles of colors as they all flop all over each other anyway.

Here is the link in case anyone wants to see these pictures. I hope some of you might be interested as I love my roses and love to show them off! Most of the pictures on page are mine, look and see the Newyorkrita caption. Afew people did add theirs at the bottom of the sets of pictures. You see the box with the first picture but keep scrolling down to see all the others. Each picture can be opened to enlarge also.

Really compaired to daylilies and iris roses are a lot of work. Need to be sprayed with systemic fungicide every two weeks to prevent blackspot. Need to be fertilized a lot. Need to be prunned a lot. But when they bloom, especially in the spring flush in June, oh, my, oh, my, oh my. They are just too beautiful Smiling
