I have grown Black Cherry many times and it does have that great black tomato taste. Plus the tomatoes are big for a cherry type. That plus the fact that one usually can find plants make it a winner.

There must be different strains of Black Cherry.
I grew some last year, and they were more like grey goose berries,
and not black at all. Not great taste either !

That sure does not sound right. I've grown Black Cherry many , many times. It is quite large for a cherry and tastes great.

Your plants must have been mis labeled.

My Black Cherry are grape shaped, a little larger than Sweet 100 or Sun Gold and are brown green in color. Rich pleasant flavor.......

Black Cherry is an open pollinated variety. There are no controls on the purity of the seed beyond the integrity of the seed grower. It is quite possible to get different versions from different vendors.

Geez, I used to buy it as a plant. Local nurseries had it. Don't think I ever grew it from seed as I haven't had it these past few years.

But I know you can get them from Baker Creek seeds and I get lots of stuff from them.

Don't get Black Vernissage or any of those Vernissage ones. People on the forums here have grown them and say they are simply the worst tasting ever. Also don't get violet Jasper. Stunning tomatoes, simply stunning but taste like crap.

Rita, I don't know if I've ever called you a seed-purchaser enabler, but I should have. Green Grin!

I was already on the Baker Creek site looking at squash seed...going to plant a moschata variety in an attempt to thwart the SVB destruction....supposedly 70 days so I should have enough time. Anyhow, I grabbed some Black Cherry seed and will be ready for next year. Thumbs up

No Verni... tomatoes. I'll remember that. Thanks. Thumbs up

My family was here for Sunday Dinner and everyone went home with a bag or Sweet 100's and SunSugar. Also a few Chocolate Sprinkles which I like better all the time.

The Hybrids tomatoes I'm planting this year are;

SunGold
Juliet
SunCherry
Big Beef

I have grown them all before with the exception of Big Beef.

SunGold and Juliet are always in my garden. Sungold for it's flavor and Juliet because it never splits or cracks and has a long shelf life.
One has to do more than just read. They have to investigate and think for themselves.

I often grow Juliet myself. I love it because I can always depend on it for tomatoes. No splitting or cracking and lots of fruit!!

Isn't Juliet an indeterminant cherry? (I've got seeds for THAT Juliet.)

It's and indeterminate but it's not a cherry. It's a small roma like tomato. When it first became available years ago some people complained about a lack of flavor. But it keeps for a very long time if put in the refrigerator.

To get the most flavor out of them. The trick is to let them sit on the counter for a couple of weeks until they just start to soften a little. At that time they also get a little darker. And then the flavor is at it's peak. Ripe right off the plant they are very firm and somewhat lacking in flavor. But they are prolific producers without cracking or cat-facing. A perfect tomato every time.

Yes, exactly correct. Let them get totally ripe for best flavor. Thumbs up
