I let this grow over 6 feet tall thinking it was something I planted. I realized when I saw the buds that it wasn't. But what was it?

I'm pretty sure it's not Common Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum), but rather the closely related Late-flowering Thoroughwort (Eupatorium serotinum) .

In Common Boneset, the paired leaves are fused at the base with no petioles. But, the leaves of your plants clearly have petioles.
