I love new gardeners ~ welcome, Judy! The day we stop learning should be the day we die.
When you're just starting out, this is my #1 rule ~ Grow What You Love.
I had always gardened a little; tulips, annuals etc., things that were pretty much idiot-proof. When I found out 15 years ago that stargazer lilies weren't tropical flowers, I was hooked!
Clematis and lilies like to have their roots shaded, so daylilies and iris are good to grow around them. Once you have a few things established then you can tuck spring bulbs between them for some early color. By the time foliage is dying back, your other plants will be sprouting up to hide it. Annuals can always be tucked in wherever you like.
4 years ago, my garden was perfect ~ I didn't feel like there was anything more that I needed or wanted to do. And it took 12 years to get there.
Then we moved! Now I have a semi-blank slate but it's coming along.
What fun would it be if there was no more gardening to be done?
