I agree on that. It is a nice daylily to have a unsavory name and I have had guppies!

Don’t trust all-purpose glue.
Garden Ideas: Level 1
We started with a large order from Wilds in 1987 including HAPPY BEGINNINGS, GEORGE CALEB, ANNIE WELCH, CUP RACE, WILD HEART, TINA RENAE, MATEUS, TROPIC TANGERINE, CATHEDRAL, SUMMER SPLENDOR, SILVER CIRCUS, FRANS HALS, and ROYAL GARNET.

These were carefully chosen from the el cheapos in the wonderful Wilds' color catalog.

We then planted them in almost pure sand where the Oklahoma sand plums shared the meager water and fertilizer we provided. By luck we had some nice ones which we grew for about twenty years, others languished and then left but MATEUS, SILVER CIRCUS, and FRANS HALS survived until the great heat wave/drought of 2011 (50 days straight of 100+ temperatures and no rain while we spent the summer here) took all of our daylily collection and then the ice storm of the century dropped all of our 60 foot tall, dead from the drought, cottonwoods across our garden like pick-up sticks. We can't even walk into what used to be our OK garden, but now we summer and garden at 8,000 feet and are starting all over.

Apologizing for the length and winding down. We grow a couple from our old collection here. BUTTERED POPCORN, PRAIRIE BLUE EYES, and ED MURRAY do great here along with 50 or so newer ones. We will have planted 80 more this year and plan on not going much larger.

... Maybe.
I’d rather have questions that can’t be answered than answers that can’t be questioned.

We moved to a new to us house almost 11 years ago and there wasn't but one perennial on this property.... a clump of hosta by the back door. The previous owners had been in the house 13 years!!!!! So eventually I have added three huge flower gardens to the property, two of which are high sun gardens and house my daylilies.

I didn't realize that I was a collector of daylilies until this year when suddenly I realized that I had a ton of them. My originals include Stella D'Oros, Little Girl, Gentle Shepherd, Siloam Double Classic, Regal Air, and several NOID's that were given to me or I lost the tags to. Early on, I also added Custard Candy, El Desperado, Final Touch, Sue Rothbauer and Frans Hal.

One of my favorites is one that is called "Show Winner" that I got in a bag at Walmart. It is beautiful, purple and blooms and blooms and blooms. No idea what it really is, but it is a great flower.

I still have all of the above, except for maybe Frans Hal, since it hasn't bloomed in a few years. I am adding a new boarder garden this fall and have 33 new varieties of daylilies to add to this new garden. *Blush*

So here is what the tag shows:
Thumb of 2015-08-22/mom2cjemma/cefd2f

This is what they look like. The are about 30-36 inches tall, not 16-22. The scapes probably has 8+ flowers and several branches.

Oh and they are actually a deeper purple but I can't get them to photograph as deep as they are.....

Very pretty blooms on Show Winner! I can see why you like it so much! Thanks for sharing your photos!

I see what you mean, no Show Winner in the Plant Database .... where do these companies get their information to label these plants? I can't believe how many daylilies this happens to. Geez!

Your Show Winnder reminds me of Nordic Night. It is a great bloomer for me. Registered as 24" but taller for me. Deep purple that is hard to get right on photos.

There have been companies who give different names to daylilies before selling them. Don't know if they lose the tag, then make up a name rather than call it an NOID? or if they just want to give it different name? I've also see companies name their seedlings, sell them with that name, but never register. They shouldn't be able to do this, but because they can, they do. That's why it's recommended you should buy from reputable sellers. Especially, it you care about getting the correct plant.

Joy, I totally agree with you.

When I started this garden 8 years ago, it was just my goal to get cheap stuff and get it into the ground. I also had no idea that what the package said wasn't necessarily what I would get. But this year I have had an enlightening and found that I can buy really nice bigger, better and correctly ID'ed plants for just as cheap or cheaper and changed my ways! Lovey dubby

Hence, my little spending spree on Homestead Farms website last night...... got to fill in all of those newly formed empty spots! Hilarious!

I did the same when starting out. Didn't save my tags either. Now everything is tagged. Hilarious! yes you can sometimes get them just as cheap or cheaper. Isn't that a nice surprise?

The stellas and Happy REturns were my first, and I still grow them. My first larger daylilies were Moonlit Masquerade, Royal Braid, and Classic Delight, a pink ML diploid by Marjorie Soules. I still grow all three, although they are in too much shade now and don't bloom well.

I have several clumps of Stella, she is a powerhouse of a plant. A Rodney Dangerfield in the plant world lol. I really need to divide them but it really doesn't seem to care that I don't.

I got started by getting some free daylilies from a friend. She had to move and was digging up a lot of her plants to take to her new home. At that time, I didn't care about names, although I doubt that she had names for them either.
After that I began to purchase them and kept track of names. I think some of the first ones I purchased were Barbara Mitchell, Ed Murray, Through Dark Waters, Lumbee Pride, Golden Scroll, and the whole thing just SNOWBALLED from there. I'm hooked. Lovey dubby Here are the pictures of the free unknown daylilies that started it all. The last one is a ditch lily. But it's pretty. The yellow one, second from the last, is a VERY VERY early bloomer. WAY before any others (even Stella do Oro) bloom.
