Beverly, those both seem like good alternatives.

Dirt--thanks for your thoughtful remarks. I understand about the thumbnails. Beverly, sorry if I over-reacted--I think I was reacting to the word 'corruption'. Dirt, thanks for your excellent response to that. Beverly, I wanted to say again that I like your ideas re: thumbnail alternative, and I hope you do decide to continue contributing.

Hope it's not too late to jump in a year and a bit later. I was just going to enter a couple more photos of Coreopsis 'Cruizin Main Street', and found I had a few single blossoms with some sort of Pollinator on them. Since they were cruizing on Main Street, I thought it might be appropriate. I remember coming across some of jmorth's flying creatures on some fall asters a while ago, and I saw one of my critters that I thought was some kind of wasp, being called a Sawfly. So how could I verify this, so I could identify it for the photo caption. I tried to enter it into the Database - no luck, since it is a PLANT Database. Then I searched and found Forums - found Butterflies, Birds and Bees, so I entered Sawfly. The third entry that came up netted me this wonderful conversation.

I hope we can eventually have a Database for these wonderful entities. Or at least a link to some of the wonderful photos that people share in these Forums.

So I will be daring, and put up just one photo with something on an underpetal. Actually, I'll do it right now, and then paste it into this conversation. Hope I don't lose this entry in the process!

The colors are so lovely together, but i didn't know how the GF would be accepted by the establishment so i made some comment about how i didn't know how the bfly got in there.

As a newbie, i already had a feeling that there was some prejudice about showing pollenators on flowers.

This feeling was confirmed when one of the moderators recently posted a comment that many people don't want to see bugs on the database flowers.
.

I'm sorry that I missed this conversation when it was new.

I've added photos to the database that have included pollinators and caterpillars...

Personally, I feel like there is something wrong with a flower when there's no critters included in the pic... Honestly, I don't 'get' the photo.

Here's a few of mine:

So...
Please post the bug pics.... I really appreciate them....
And...
Some of us garden for the pollinators and songbirds, and seeing them on the plant is actually a recommendation for growing those particular plants...

If the plant doesn't attract pollinators, or birds... it would kinda be out of place at my house...

Did anything ever happen with this?

No, nothing ever really happened with this, as far as I know, anyway Shrug!

Nice pics stone!
And yes, I too take the critter pics as a recommendation of sorts for the plant Smiling

Nora, I think your thing is a wasp rather than a sawfly...hard to tell just now here on the phone though

Try searching "sand wasp" or "sand bee"...
They are valuable pollinators at my house, and catch various insects, Which they cache in holes in the sand.

I take a lot of pics of them in my garden....

My photo of butterflies snacking on bananas is currently the 1st pic under Banana in the database.

in spite of the reality that it is a butterfly picture more than a banana pic.
It is an attention grabber though.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

Found your picture fascinating, jmorth. And it's a popular picture - I had no idea that butterflies would be that attracted to Bananas!

Thank you, dirtdorphins and stone for clarifying that my Coreopsis 'Cruizin' down 'Main Street' had a Sand Wasp on it.
I have corrected that in the Database. I also saw that I have an inappropriate (?) number of Thumbs Up - 13 - for that photo, and it is at the head of the list. In this case, I agree that the insect or some such, shouldn't be the star feature - it should be the plant that is being acknowledged.

What to do about this dilemma? I agree that it is natural for the 'intruder' to be there, but we don't want them to steal the show.

By the way, this year I have had 3 or 4 times the number of ants on my Daylily blossoms than ever before. Any thoughts on sudden huge increases in the ant population? Perhaps it is because my new garden is built on top of many, many dumptruck loads of sand fill, which was dumped and tamped down or rolled to a consistency of concrete. On top of this, 4 to 6 inches of impoverished, dry topsoil was spread. Then 2 years of winds blew this away before a garden and lawn could be established. No wonder the Sand Wasps like my place so much! Perhaps I should have started a new Thread with this last paragraph in the Daylily Forum area - but now that I've written it here, I don't know how to put it elsewhere. I've never initiated a thread before.
