So I was able to go back through 9 years worth of photos and pull all of my daylily photos into one folder. I was thrilled to find a few pictures of the actual flower cards and then based on location was able to confirm that they are still in my gardens That included Gentle Shepherd and Little Girl.

Then there is the "Regal Heir". Here is the flower label from 2008

Color description: purple self with yellow green throat

So I am totally confused!!! I still have this and it is still the exact same color........ So would an otherwise "purple flower" really be able to turn red or is this color a variation of purple or is this one of those mass planting that was given a random name and sold to a big box store????

I should add that it is a massively prolific bloomer with tons and tons of flowers, and is taller than the described 22 inches. Probably more like 30-36 inches and the seedpods all shrivel up and turn black within 2 weeks of going to seed.

Yep, Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Regal Heir') looks to be purple in color. I wonder if the labels got mixed up ... happens all the time with plants at big box stores. Yous looks more like Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Regal Air') but I know nothing about daylilies and I'm really bad about comparing photos for ID so it's just a guess on my part

Is there a company name on that label? If so, I wonder if they are still in business. Do a google search and if so, I would contact them with your photos and the AHS/ATP link to show them the difference in plants.

check out red rum, I see it sold here alot at Lowes and Walmart.

I have had the same problem with tags. At least 3 plants that were put in last year came out different then the tag. I do like the idea of taking picture of the tags for reference. If you can't depend on the growers tag and the garden selling it, what do you believe?

I agree with Lin, Regal Air looks like a very close match to my eye. Tag switch or just error with tags that said Regal Heir & Regal Air maybe???

Same thing happened to my wife. Daylily in a bag said Calico Jack and what she got on the bloom looked like a small semi-spider. Not an ugly bloom but not Calico Jack either. I will never trust a bagged store daylily again.

Ok, I am going to go with label misprint.

Looking at the AHS site and the ATP database, what I have definitely meets the definition of Regal Air.

As for contacting the company, all I have is what you see on the picture. But I can totally see someone saying, "hey make us some tags of this red daylily "Regal Air" and the person hearing "Regal Heir" !!!!!

I learned from a nursery lady a few years ago that English is usually not the first language for folks working the fields and potting up and labeling plants for market and sometimes plants get tagged with the wrong labels. There is also a problem in nurseries and big box stores when customers remove a label/tag to read about the plant and unintentionally puts it back in the wrong pot.
