I was wondering where in the us zone wise could/can you grow a Titan arum outside year round. I hear they get immense and barring a 30 foot ceiling where can you grow them outside of a green house

They have one here at Selby Botanical Gardens but it's still in the greenhouse. Guess even our mild winters get too cold sometimes for it. Maybe down in the Florida Keys it would grow outside.

Other than a really huge greenhouse, a mall with a big atrium might be a place, but they don't want high maintenance plants that need humidity, take watering every day, make flowers that stink like a dead body, and go dormant even indoors.

Chicago Botanical Garden has their first currently getting ready to bloom. Of course, in a greenhouse. They have set up a live feed on the blooming. The spike is currently 68" tall.

Must admit, I'd rather look at pictures of that one than actually visit it in person. Another of the common names for it is "Corpse Flower". Ewwww. Seems like a good way to keep the public from wanting to visit your greenhouse.

I can't wait to get my first wiff in person Elaine. Uconn may have an inflorescence starting! Cindy is there a video link of the CBG plant?

I've always heard that Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum) requires a very hot climate to grow outdoors and I read somewhere once that they prefer dry conditions. I too prefer viewing photos of that interesting plant rather than growing one, I lean towards plants with nice a fragrance.

Thanks for the link Lin. I've never heard of A. titanum being grown outdoors year round outside of the tropics. They bloom or produce a leaf and go dormant at any or all times of the year. They need consistent moisture, humidity and heat when actively growing but are prone to tuber rot when dormant if the soil is too wet.

Okay.... oh well....... it was a nice fantacy.

We have stinky mushrooms here that are bad enough - they're even called "stinkhorns" and they're really pretty but boy! Do they ever stink like a dead animal for a few days - terrible. And of course like most mushrooms they just pop up randomly where you really don't want them. Luckily they're bright red so easy to find and enclose in a bag to prevent the spores from dispersing.

Hmm, maybe I'll send you one in your next package of plants . . . since you're so fond of stinky plants.

Pretty sure most of them in the US are in greenhouses.

Everybody seems to name their Titans. Has one Pepé Le Pew been used?

Although I've never smelled A. Titan, I have indeed smelled a skunk and from what I've heard, the Titan is much smellier ... Pepe' Le Pew might be offended if someone named their Titan after him.

I would think you might move to Sumatra or so if you want to grow one outside!
There was a Titan Arum blooming at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in 2006 and we paid it a visit. The stink is highly overrated, since it doesn't last that long and when we saw it, the scent was bearable. The flower was gorgeous!!
