Hi everyone -- this is my first post on Cubits. Seems very nice here.

Now, what villain is doing this to my lily buds, and what did I do to IT? I've seen it on 4 or 5 buds so far. The bud ripens and eventually unfurls normally, except that there's this hole in one tepal. I cut one bud off to have a look and there was nothing disgusting inside, thank goodness.

Thanks!

Peculiar and probably a diagnostic characteristic that the holes are so exactly round. No clue as to the culprit. Is it only affecting lilies, and only martagons?

Yes, only lilies, but not only martagons. Asiatics, too. It seems not to happen until the buds mature past the hard green stage, so it's too soon to tell on OTs and orientals. Another thing is that foliage seems not to be affected at all. Just the lovely buds! And it's not confined to just one clump or corner but is popping up everywhere. My garden's very small of course, but still.

Another weird thing, which may not be related at all, is that I did find some yucky poopy (not to be too scientific about it) looking stuff on a couple of lilies, on leaves pretty high up. One bit definitely looked like some kind of rodent dropping. The other stuff was different. Hard to describe. Kind of lumpy, slimy, sticky, brown, a little shiny, raisin-sized.

I'm not going to be any help, but I have had the same thing happen and never did find out what was causing it. Just a nice round hole in some of the buds.

I'd love to find out too.

It's like you need 24 hour surveillence to figure it out.

If you have a county agricultural extension service in your area, I would take the critter there as well as a damaged bud. they should know.

Did you leave the "culprit" on the (Karen North?) bud to see what it would do?

I did leave it there and checked back periodically. Eventually it was gone, and there was a tiny hole on the other side of the bud, but I didn't catch him quite in the act. Tracey, yes, I need a nanny cam. Whatever it is has done this to lilies all over the garden. Nothing's really damaged except the flower that gets the swiss cheese treatment.

Just thinking that we must have a county extension office for this area, right? Even though we're right in the city? Will look into that.

Did you ever get an answer from the County Extension Office on this Laura?

Hi Chris, yaknow, I never got very far with that. Truth is, I have no idea where my county extension office is, though I suspect it's not local to me in the city. So while I perplexed over the first step, I soon got completely sidetracked. The problem did die down a bit. Much less munching these last few weeks. Maybe because whoever it was had lots of food to choose from . Or it'd moved on in its life cycle . Or something.

Glad to hear the critters have moved on. Since you're not that far away from me I was just wondering so I know what to watch for. I'm just dreading the lily beetle showing up here cuz I'm sure it will happen sooner or later.

Definitely wasn't the lily beetle. I think I'd have noticed them. A key point is that the damage was merely superficial and restricted to the buds. No leaves were damaged. And the plant itself was always aok.
