'Double Sensation' was not documented by me in a photo this year. It was hideous. I had two of them and they looked the same, perhaps the color was washed out because of our hotter weather and that last year it looked nice because I was lucky enough to have cool weather. Not sure. I did let it mature for a few days, just to make sure it was really that ugly, and it was. The deep red of last year was replaced with what looked like a faded red t-shirt that had been left out in he sun for two summers color. It was not at all charming. It didn't look to have a virus, there was no color break and the leaves and plant form were perfect, it was just the overall form was less desirable and the color was a whole lot less as well.

No, and (un)fortunately I won't Rolling on the floor laughing As I said, each to his/her own and I know someone did post as liking it.
I'll give a bulb at least three years. I seldom purchase lilies locally in any form since they are pretty much limited to the common Asiatics or 3-4 types of common Orientals.

This was purchased as a two foot, two stem plant with multiple buds from our best local nursery. Their plant material is superior in all respects so when I saw this, I grabbed it because it was an Asiatic I'd never seen. No picture on the tag, but described as a red double with clear white throat...ahhh...nope.

I do have my favorites, which seem to change yearly, but I've never seen a lily strike me this negatively since I've been growing them or drooling at everyone's online. There are too many out there for me to personally give this one a second year at my house Smiling

Spot on, Barbara! It is Eryngium amethystinum. It sure hates transplanting. I thought I lost it the year I planted it (and it came up quite poorly the following year too), but now it has settled in well. This one is supposed to be smaller than E. planum and E. x tripartatum, but I haven't had it long enough to know from experience. This one is getting a bit larger each year so far (this year about 16 inches).

Barbara, I read the thread and looked at all your fabulous pictures! I can almost see and smell each one as if it were in my yard. You have so many gorgeous plants!

I would re-name Double Sensation" Gaudy Old Woman." A shame to be so homely :o(

You really put out the effort to have blooms so beautiful! I honestly can't pick a favorite. I do look forward to picture thois year!
