At someone's recommendation I have hung baggies with Irish Spring soap (original formula) in the trees and it is keeping the deer away.

I overseed my horse pastures with winter rye and that keeps the deer out of my garden beds. I started this after they got into my daylily bed and cropped all of the plants and stole a few for good measure. I'll try the hair around my summer food plot though.

The Irish Spring soap works good but I got sick of having bars of soap all over.
I think I'll try the hair idea next spring. We haven't had much of a deer problem this year. Must be the drought. You'd think they would have set up camp in my garden with there being several water sources and lots of good eats.

We have a herd that lives in our neighborhood around the lake. They have been especially bothersome this year. I've got Irish Spring out and have been spraying with "deer soup" that I make in a five gallon bucket. It has raw eggs, garlic, hot sauce, peppermint oil, fish emulsion and a couple of other things in it. I'm going to try the hair too.

The Irish Spring works well at keeping the deer at bay but be super cautious doing that if you have curious dogs. My dog loves anything that smells pretty and he ate one of the little bags. Normally that would only be a minor problem but in our case the drawstring got caught on his pyloric valve and the bag could not pass through his intestines. We don't know how long it was in there causing havoc but by the time he showed symptoms and we got him to the vet he required major surgery which involved removing 20" of his intestines. He was in the doggy hospital for 18 days. The bags had been hung high up, out of reach, in the shrubbery but he apparently stood on his hind legs to reach this one.

Perfumy hair sounds pretty safe if you have curious pets.

I live in deer country, too. I've heard about using hair in the garden to keep the deer away, but never tried it. Soaking it in dollar store "perfume" would sure make the garden smell nice.

A few years ago I bought cheap carpet deodorant powder and sprinkled it into the garden beds. It worked well, but I had to reapply it EVERY TIME it rained.

The last 2 years I've made my own deer repellent. It works well, but if we have a stretch of rainy days, I reapply it the NEXT DRY DAY. Otherwise, it lasts about 10 days for me. I use:
1 gallon jug of water
3 raw eggs (beaten)
2 tablespoons cinnamon
2 tablespoons of ground cloves
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
Mix it all up well in the gallon water jug and let it sit in the sun for a day or so. Longer if you have the time.
When I'm ready to use it, I pour some into a large watering container about 1/2 to 3/4 filled with plain water, swish it around, and just sprinkle my plants or gardens with it. It really stinks at first but the smell fades pretty quickly. And it does work! The ingredients are basically what is used in Deer-B-Gon.

I have used milorganite this year as well and it has also helped keep the rabbits out of of the daylilies as well. I think that alternating helps keep the deer from becoming to familiar with one odd scent. But whatever keeps them from nipping off my buds right before they bloom.... I will do it. So the hair/perfume along with the milorganite has equaled no lost buds! I hope it does the same for each of you!
