I live in deer country, too. I've heard about using hair in the garden to keep the deer away, but never tried it. Soaking it in dollar store "perfume" would sure make the garden smell nice.
A few years ago I bought cheap carpet deodorant powder and sprinkled it into the garden beds. It worked well, but I had to reapply it EVERY TIME it rained.
The last 2 years I've made my own deer repellent. It works well, but if we have a stretch of rainy days, I reapply it the NEXT DRY DAY. Otherwise, it lasts about 10 days for me. I use:
1 gallon jug of water
3 raw eggs (beaten)
2 tablespoons cinnamon
2 tablespoons of ground cloves
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
Mix it all up well in the gallon water jug and let it sit in the sun for a day or so. Longer if you have the time.
When I'm ready to use it, I pour some into a large watering container about 1/2 to 3/4 filled with plain water, swish it around, and just sprinkle my plants or gardens with it. It really stinks at first
but the smell fades pretty quickly. And it does work! The ingredients are basically what is used in Deer-B-Gon.
