Ken, 48F is getting cold for them. Will not stand too many days with that temperature and especially if wet. I have mine in when temperatures at night get any lower than 50F - 55F.

Thank you, Rick, for your input about temperature.

Here's another possible candidate for bonsai training but I'm not sure now. There is much work to be done on the roots. I will need to eliminate about half of the roots.

Kadie very interesting! I was wondering why the top was flat and short. Thumbs up

Kadie, did you happen to cut of the base of this tree at some point? Looks like the 'centipede roots' that many of the Thai growers are producing.

Kadie, I hope you do not mind me putting these photo's on your thread.

This is the one small Bonsai that I have started.

All of those grew from seed in only 13 months? Wow. I have thought about trying some from seed as I am a seed growing nut. Smiling I had no idea they could grow that large tht quickly. Presuming that pasrt of it has to be your zone.

Rick, not only do I not mind at all, but I also encourage others' participation in this thread regards "bonsai training." I appreciate it very much!

Looks like you are doing a wonderful job in training your tree! Lovey dubby

Yes, I did cut off the tap root but left the feeder roots above and nicked some more to produce more roots. Too much, apparently! Sticking tongue out

Yes, 13 months! And yes, uninterrupted growth due to my zone. However, adeniums can be pushed regardless of zone when given ample warmth, light, moisture, and humidity (even if it's just spritzing every day). Go for it...but be forewarned, they can be addictive! Smiling

Katie, is this an obesum or arabicum which you cut off the tap root (Haddock root).

I could not believe my eyes when I saw it. Almost fell off my chair!
So fantastic, stupendous and I could go on.
You have created a spectacular specimen and you need to look at some of the Centipede root trained Arabicums that are being sold.
They use them in Thailand, but it is now adenium growers around the world seeking these.
http://siamadenium.com/article...

I am wishing I was closer, I would come over and snatch that one.

Hetty, They call them Centipede root trained, because of the main roots all around the outside of the caudex, like the one that Kadie has. Lucky girl Sticking tongue out
Most of what you see in Thailand are produced with Thai Socotranums and some Arabicums.
They lift and cut the base of the tree (trees are what they refer to them as) all roots off.
Dry, treat and replant to produce a circle of roots around the perimeter of the caudex.

They raise the trees over the years, taking the roots (have to be hung for 3-4wks., so the roots become somewhat malleable) and placing them where they want creating a really cool appearance.

This a borrowed photo, not mine.

I believe that many of these are being produced for outside of Thailand. Most of the Thai Masters like Natural roots as opposed to centipede roots.
They raise them almost giving them a 'mountain top' tree.

Rick, it's an obesum. It looks like an arabicum because of the wide caudex and the crown of stems on top. You certainly could have this one, I have a couple more like it.

I clicked the link you gave and knew right off before reading the text that the trees were Thai Soco's. It is my hope that the TS of which seeds you sent me will grow like those.

I looked closely at the picture of the arabicum with the centipede roots...I can see the line of demarcation where the base was cut...the same kind of line that you would see around a rooted cutting. Although the trained roots are impressive, the line takes away from it sorta kinda. I'm with the Thai Masters...Natural is beautiful. Smiling (referring to arabicum roots)

Ken, your seedlings appear to be fattening up. Hurray! One of them in the front row (magnify picture) appears to be being wind-swept already, but alas this is too soon to tell for sure. Whistling

Glad Rick piped in to answer your question about temperature...I mentioned on another thread that adeniums should be brought in before temperatures go below 60F. Now I know 50F to 55F are the cut-off temps for outdoors. Big Grin

I did not see a response before leaving for tailgating and our football game. All my plants stayed outside and as far as I can tell, there are no problems with any of them this morning. I don't know what our low ended up being. I just know that 48 F was forecast yesterday, AM.

Haha ... I just broke down the other day and ordered about 50 Plumeria seeds for 6 species. Heh. I suppose Adenium will be next. Have to admit - I have considered.

But I must restrain myself somewhat cause I simply cannot grow from seed some of everything I have. I have one Adenium, one Plumeria, one clivia ...... and LOTS of other things. hehe. I did also break down and start Brugmansia from seed. And Datura. And Heliconia. And ... Hilarious!
