Have you come across any meters than have been less than durable for you? I'd like to know if there are any that are too cheap to bother with.
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

I'm going to look here first. It is local for me. It also looks like they have the calibration buffers and electrode storage solution. They offer a large selection and are moderately priced. I'm willing to cough up $100-200. Besides, I rather enjoy geeky toys. I could check the pH of the cats' water, the birdbath, etc...

Yep, had one of those and he tested positive on that pH scale. Did I ever tell you about the kitty fire? Nah, maybe another time... makes my head hurt.

Well I swung by Samurai yesterday... They sure didn't have all that stuff in that catalog and slim pickins for pH meters. I opted for this one, the pH1;

http://www.fishersci.com/ecomm...

The resolution is only 0.1 pH unit but I don't think I need any better than that. I calibrated it and then checked my tap water; it was 8.5, just about what the city says it should be after they happily contaminate it.

The downside is that the meter is integral with the probe so if the probe goes out the whole thing is done for (probe not replaceable). So it is important to keep it clean and free of contamination and stored in special solution.

I guess time will tell about how durable it is. The specs. indicate that battery life is expected to be 100 hours. It uses 4 LR44 batteries, easily accessible at the top of the meter. And for nerds, there is a clip so you can attach it to a pocket. Big Grin

You can probably find this meter or something similar at any well stocked hydroponic shop. They also had a combination meter that measures TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). It is an indirect way of determining the level of fertilizer in solution.

My 4th seedling this year the best looking so far. If any of you have 'Eric,' this has that dried blood red color added with a hint of violet.

(Actual flower is slightly more deep red)

I like that color. It also reminds me a bit of 'Hiawatha' in color too. Pretty.

Questions: (1) If you were able to cross a Tetra Trumpet with a Tetra OT, how do you figure if its a Trumpet or OT?
(2) I would like to see a list of crosses the members have made that was fertile.
Any takers....... Group hug

I think it would still be considered OT. Of course one could keep crossing back to T until you might as well call it a trumpet but as long as there is O there I believe the hybridizers keep calling it OT.

I did make a list of crosses that I have made that produced seeds with embryos. Since I can't possibly start all of my own seeds I depend on others to report on success (or lack thereof).

I have Flugelhorn strain (white, 4n) x Rococo in the NALS sale now. It is inaccurately listed in the Division 6 Trumpet group. That may be my fault. It is the only T x OT cross I did last year and it made a fair amount of seeds with embryos.

But if you had the trumpet[stem parent] crossed with the oriental[pollen parent],shouldnt it be called a 'TO'_ a bit like a' LO'? Confused Confused Confused

Well, unlike the LOs I haven't seen any effort to designate (at least in commercial sales) the interspecific crosses of OTs. At least not around here. Do they do that down under?

Here is a container of Pink Perfection x African Queen planted from seed on 2-27-11. I have several crosses with trumpet types and Pink Perfection if anyone wants them. If you do, send me a cmail.

I sow some seeds of the same cross today. Although I am confused as to which one is the real African Queen in my garden. One has brown pollen and the other one has orange. So I mixed their pollen together and dabbed them on Pink Perfection. She gave me lots of seeds. Thumbs up

I still have some left.
