Hello again all.
I believe the mystery plant has been solved again. I took the plant to our local Hull Collage Horticultural society and a nice gentleman called Peter Richardson, took a cutting of the plant and today I received an email from him reading as follows.
( Not a hundred percent certain, but the common consensus is that it is a Canterbury bell, which is often treated as a biennial (2 year life cycle) which could explain why it hasn’t flowered yet.)

Below I have added a few Google image search's of the Canterbury Bell.
(Campanula medium, common name Canterbury bells, also known as the bell flower, is an annual or biennial, flowering plant of the genus Campanula, belonging to the family Campanulaceae. In floriography, it represents gratitude, or faith and constancy.)

If anyone has any knowledge that this might not be the plant then please let me know.
: thank you: everybody Lawrence

I have grown a few different species of Campanula and it doesn't ring a bell. Rolling on the floor laughing

https://www.google.co.uk/searc...

There's something frustratingly familiar about it which I can't quite place! The single leaves still look like lettuce but the whole plant doesn't.

There is a similarity to one dwarf plant you posted..

http://www.alpine-seeds.com/ga...

The browser bar gives a species name of Campanula lasiocarpa, the leaf margins are a little different but the base/stem is similar.

https://www.google.co.uk/searc...

There's a lot of species and hybrids, see if you get flowers next year.

Many thanks Janet and Greene and others for your help and support with this plant. I have moved it into a well aired plastic green house and I use that term loosely.
Hopefully next year if it survives the winter and flowers we will have a better idea if it is the Canterbury Bell or not. I think Janet may well have the full answer to this in the back of her mind, so Ill will wait to see what happens. If it's OK with the site administrators I would like to leave this thread open. Hopefully to a proper outcome.
Thanks again.
Lawrence

Your assumption is correct Lawrence!

I will reveal that I had searched out the salad leaves called Rocket, with no success in finding leaves like this but now I have found one which is close. I have grown Rocket, once only, the flavour wasn't anything to write home about. It was bland and a little bitter, but I'm sure some Rocket has flavour worth making the effort.

The growth habit could well fit, read what it says here:

The more rocket you pick the more will grow. Either cut a few leaves at a time or slice off the whole plant just above the surface of the soil and wait for the stump to re-sprout.

http://www.paddocks-allotments...

The bolded bit may explain the root stump with several growths. The jury is still out though! The leaves of Rocket are often lobed but there's much research and development going on so who knows what selections have been made.

Enlarge the photo on the next link and you can see some leaves which are not lobed.

Hello All.
Some may remember from last year, I asked if anyone could identify this plant.
Well this might help, I have taken these photo's of the plant as it is this year, a great difference.

I've been staying out of this, but just to throw out a thought, my first impression was either campanula or primula.

Campanula, not sure which as there's several species and hybrids. C. takesimana has pinkish flowers. The leaves have changed dramatically!

Janet and Carol. I think you both have the correct plant at long last.
Very well done to To you both and all the others who have taken the time to help me.
As soon as the flowers bloom I will post a photo so as to give the plant it full title.
I looked at the link, kindly supplied by Janet and I could not believe the amount of different kinds of Campanula there are.
Again many thanks.

I bought a packet of mixed species seed several years ago Lawrence, they had a bed almost to themselves but some self seeding Geraniums are taking over. The Campanula got their own back as several have self set in other places, they work it out between themselves.

I managed to recognise most of the species I had, some have disappeared. None had quite the same young leaves as your plant has but I had one which looked like C. takesimana. Campanula are a favourite plant of Megachile willughbiella which I get every year, I also found another dead bee species which is quite small and fairly rare but haven't seen a live one, I would have to search my photos for the name but it specialises on Campanula.

Thank you for the wonderful news janet.

I don't feed my plants, species often do well in unadulterated soil. It was raining here this morning too, it's recently fined up. It wasn't supposed to continue to rain after last weeks cold rainy lot!

I found the small bee, it's Chelostoma campanularum which is around 6mm in length. This was at the end of July 2011. It's not rare in the south but isn't supposed to be where I am, but that's not unusual as I have found several very rare insects which are not supposed to be here or anywhere much in the country.

Very pretty! I think it's a biennial though called Canterbury Bells (Campanula medium) so you might want to save seed.
