We would like to hear from you guys.

Good here in North Carolina. 12 days of rain, but nothing compared to South Carolina. Hope my neighbors to the south are all safe!

Ann - Florida really dodged the bullet with Joaquin, didn't it? So glad it went out to sea.

Well, it never was slated to come here but being a Floridian I know they are just "weather guessers" & they've missed enough times for me not to rely tooooo heavily on forecast tracks, models & predictions. I was waiting for it to take that northward turn & when that happened I felt better. Green Grin! However, where we live now in the north central part of the state I worry much, much less & odds are if we ever get one come across us here it will just be what we call "a big blow" as opposed to when we lived directly on the southeast coast down in Hobe Sound --- you had to worry for 6 months of every year.

Thanks for asking about us. I've been MIA due to so much going on. I live in Orangeburg, SC, midway between Columbia, the state capital and Charleston, on the east coast. The whole state took a beating from this historical flooding event--this was really a 1000 year storm. Flooding of this magnitude has never occurred in SC, not even with Hurricane Hugo, which devastated the east coast in 1989. Residents were totally unprepared for this event, and many homeowners did not have flood insurance, as they felt that they did not need it. Some had to be rescued by boat and others by helicopter as waters rose several feet. One ATP member reported that her two daughters, who both live in and attend college in Columbia, had to be evacuated from their apartments, but they are safe. One has to boil her water, but the other has no water services. Adjustments are being made, but things are returning to normal.

Fortunately my area of the state was spared the brunt of the storm and did not receive as much rain as areas further upstate. Columbia received up to 27 inches from the storm and we received between 13 and 18 inches. An astronomical number of dams across the state were breached and several failed altogether, flooding the state capital in several areas. I'm sure you've seen the pictures on national TV. Only 1 dam here in Orangeburg was breached. Edisto Gardens, a rose garden here in Orangeburg, was totally flooded all the way to the major Highway 301, which had to be closed to traffic. It was unbelievable. Portions of I-26 and I-95 had to be closed to traffic, because their conditions was unstable. Slowly they are being reopened as repairs are made to make them more secure. At this time, Coastal areas are being evacuated as a precaution, as the water from the flooded areas recede. The state is recovering slowly, but surely.

Thank you for the update Deborah. I truly feel for those who had no flood insurance. it's going to take a while for things to get back to normal. I'm very glad to hear your area was not so hard hit.

I tip my hat to you. It's nice to know that others do care and are concerned. It's hard to know what to grow in this area. There are some years, like earlier this year, when we had drought conditions. During other years, we get too much rain, like 2 years ago when I lost nearly all of my irises. Thumbs down One thing I know for sure is that this area is not ready for drought tolerant plants. They will surely rot it it gets too wet. Shrug!

So now that the waters have receded (hopefully), did anyone have many losses from all the rain, wind and flooding? It was pretty tame in Durham. My creek didn't wash anything away. Lost two iris to rot, and saved partials on two more. All and all very lucky. My heart goes out to all of you that lost much much more.

I am sure the folks at Edisto Gardens are heartbroken about their roses.
