it was suggested that I try these of these since they are martagon hybrids and the martagon did not do well here last year.
I have 3 of them on order to plant but wander what everyones thought is on this plant..

They grow well here in my zone 3 garden. What zone are you trying to grow them in?

I grow several varieties of Martagons here in zone 3 as well and they do great. They aren't a beacon for the lily beetles like the Asiatics yet so I hope that continues. Here is one of mine that I think may be Claude Shride. I have several noids.

DebbieC, that looks like Claude Shride to me too.

Debbie's martagon doesn't look like Claude Shride to me. Many martagons have the same color flowers, but Claude Shride has fewer, wider leaves in each whorl. Claude Shride does not exhibit those nice lampost "S" shaped pedicels, either.

Rick, is that a variegated Hardy Geranium in the back of you first picture? If so, which? Do you have a picture of the flowers?

All beautiful Martagons Susie and Rick! And you're right, there are many with similar colours. I have a few that I don't know the name of. Usually I need to know the names, but somehow it doesn't bother me with these plants.

No. It is Variegated Japanese hops (vine). Humulus japonicus variegatus


Male flowers (not very pretty).

You can't even see the female flowers. They are very tiny and hidden, and are on separate plants.

It's an annual vine, and thank goodness: it only grows 15-30ft. The perennial hops that beer is made from grow 40ft or more!
I only allow the best 4 plants or so to grow each year, and pull about a hundred seedlings. I have had them for at least ten years, and judicious selection of the best plants have produced better variegation. I had a few leaves this year that were 80% white! Let me know if you want seed.

This year we had rain from mid-winter on and it is said we will until mid-November, but this is due to the El Nino current. Last summer, again, I lost many plants to the draught and later to the hungry rodents (consequence of the draught), so I will not grow anything new (well, maybe some Liliums .......) from seed until either the climate is more stable or we find another affordble water source.

My other concern is not to plant anything that could become invasive. Living in the middle of gorgeous native woods, I do not want to contaminate them with foreign species.

how tall does this plant get??
I thought Martagon were shorter but by the looks of Susie's I would they are quite tall
lots of blooms though .......

I planted Martagon Album last year and no luck....it came up a bit and then quit and went back into the ground..... Not sure if it is pouty or what??
so they suggested this new one instead and see how it does

Yes Martagons can be quite tall, 3-5 feet is not unusual especially if they are happy. The blooms are smaller but there are many! It's not uncommon for them to "pout" like you describe in the first year or so but be patient and they will reward you. They are great plants!

how many types of lilies can you grow in that zone and winter over?
just wandering since where I am in zone 5a I lost a few of my OT's last year........and I heavily mulched too

Asiatics and LA's are the hardiest here, not requiring protection. I have had some luck growing Orientals, Trumpets and hybrids if they are mulched and in a protected area. However, I have removed most of my lilies because of the lily beetle. It broke my heart, but it just became too much a daily battle against that scourge. I am replacing many of them with daylilies.

that is sad. No problem with the lily beetle here.......and hope never to see any either....
