My neighbor sent me this photo and I believe it is a chenille plant. Is this correct?

Thank You! Jean. I think the neighbors will be satisfied with "Chenille Plant". The plant was at their son's home in Texas and he told them it was a mum!

Always can learn something on ATP! Database says it can be a perennial. I always thought they were annuals. Got my interest a bit more now Smiling .

No, that's a Celosia. Most likely the cultivar called 'Intenz'. Smiling

Hmmm, I think I agree with Danita. My first thought was Celosia also.

LOL! My first thought on seeing the photo was some sort of Amaranthus, but decided it might be too small. I wonder how closely related the Acalypha, Celosia and Amaranthus families are?

Acalypha is in Euphorbiaceae and Amaranthus and Celosia are in Amaranthaceae

Celosia and Amaranthus are both in the family Amaranthaceae. However, Acalypha is in the family Euphorbiaceae which is pretty far from Amaranthaceae. (at least by current taxonomy, who knows what they'll discover tomorrow! Hilarious! )

Thanks Jean! I really do want to check out the Acalypha further. Euphorbs might have longer lifespans if protected from frost. I assume the rating for Zone 11 is where it can be grown outside and survive which puts it squarely in with the tropicals as far as temps go.

I wonder why the Celosia argentea says that it's an annual in the database here, yet has a hardiness rating? A plant needs to be perennial somewhere to have a hardiness rating.

@Terrafirma it says in the database that you have that plant. Is it still around?

My MIL had A wilkesiana growing in the ground beside a west facing wall. We are zone 9a . She would throw a sheet over it if frost was predicted, and add a sheet of visqueen over the cloth for a freeze. It froze back to the ground a couple times, but resprouted in the spring.

Celosia Argentea are tender perrenials. That they are listed as annuals adds to the confusion. They are grown as annuals in zones that can not support them over winter, but that does not make them an annual.

I grow chenille in my zone 8 garden without protection from winter freezes.
The flowers are remarkably similar, but chenille doesn't turn colour as the amaranth is... Also, the seeds on the amaranth are going to be pretty obvious.
In the 3 years or so that I've had the acalypha pendula, I've not noticed any seeds.

Agreed, taking a perennial to where it can't survive perennially doesn't make it an annual, (but understandably & necessarily, they are sometimes sold in places where not hardy with labels that say annual, so the buyer has no wrong expectations.)

Tiffany, no, this one was in the ground and did not survive last winter. Even though we had a fairly mild one...Only a couple of freezes, but lots of frosty conditions. Wishing now that I had potted it up. Oh well, live and learn.
