I know I planted corn and the second crop got rust, Might be the same 'bug'.

I haven't seen a daylilly here, but there might be some. I heard someplace that the evergreen ones will survive without a cooling period. Coldest night so far has been 68. Brrrrrrrr!!!

Yes, I'll look into some seed. I used to grow and pollinate my own daylillies back up in Virginia, a few hundred years ago! There was an old guy breeding them, he actually got a white when I knew him, I visited every year.

Thank you!

Do you know about the Lily Auiction? Best place to buy daylily seeds. You could have lots of fun growing out your own seedlings.

I know daylilies grow in Hawaii, so I would assume they would also grow in the VI. Again, seeds are your best way, and I agree with the others, best choices are on the lily auction. ~Jan

Thanks! And Oh no, at the same time, I have 167 baby Adeniums in a kitty litter tray that will need potting up in a week or two...

Rust on daylilies is not the same fungus as the one on corn. You could get rust from seeds if the seeds came into your garden with rust spores on them. I think that would be somewhat unlikely, however. The rust spores live on the leaves of daylilies.

I do have a couple of Frank Smith daylilies, including American Freedom and Crazy Ivan. They are both hardy here. I was disappointed with AF however. It was not even close to being the color in the introduction photo. Crazy Ivan is just like the picture, however.

Dick, is that your photo of American Freedom? I have only seen it once, in John Rice's greenhouse. I remember it being yellow.

I recognize that as the intro photo.
I had it years ago, it was a golden yellow, sometimes with a little peach coloring.

I have grown most everything of Franks and all have done well here, but I am in the deep south with very little winter. I have two problems with the way he registers his plants. All are registered as simi evergreen, I don't see how thats possible, Salter does the same thing. The other thing, the 2011s I am growing, I think something like 7 out of 12 are registered as 7" or larger. They may be 7" in Florida but the normal gardner will not be able to grow them to that size. This creates a problem when you want to enter them in daylily shows because they have to go in the extra large section no matter what size you grow them to. If the daylily is undergrown from the size its registered it can never win. Oops I'm getting off on another subject. I will say the best eye and edge daylily I have ever grown is his HAPPY HAPPY, it's the closest thing I have seen to the perfect daylily. I am not a daylily collector but I will grow HAPPY HAPPY for a while longer.

That is one gorgeous daylily. I am anxiously awaiting the price to come down a bit to acquire it. Well maybe I'll wait and maybe I will get impatient enough to go ahead and buy it anyway, lol.

I just purchased HAPPY HAPPY through the Lily Auction, and I'm very happy that I will be getting it next month. It does look absolutely perfect to my untrained eye, and I've seen Fred rave about it before which is why I decided to take the plunge. And there's one there right now that they're bidding on.

I didn't know that Frank Smith and Jeff Salter registered all their daylilies as SEV, and I've been trying to purchase some toothy daylilies that are not dormants. So that is good information to know -- that I may still be purchasing a dormant listed as a SEV if I purchase one of theirs.

Different Directions is calling my name. I like big flowers and orange. It's 8.5". Should be striking in a clump.

I grow 3 of Frank's and all have proved hardy in zone 5. Wings of Angels is still blooming well in mid Aug as this photo taken today shows. Looking at the photo, I think it must be a bud builder. Looks like more buds are developing.

Heaven's Gatekeeper is sending up a rebloom scape. It's a nice sherbet orange. Only complaint I have about it is that it's a little slow to fully open in the mornings. I get home from work at 7:30 and always have to give it an hour or two after that before taking photos.

The other one I have is Moment in the Sun. It's a small single fan that was new this year and only had 3 flowers. Will see how it does in another year or two.
