There are some wonderful mentors out in daylily land. Just wondered what pearls of wisdom you would like to share. Could be from any plant enthusiast really:

From John Rice: The pollen goes here.

From Judy Davisson: Nine whacks for selling those seeds. Whack, whack, whack, whack, whack, whack, whack, whack, whack.

From Joe Kunkel (akinback on the LA back in the day): Do NOT build a greenhouse.

Now your turn...

Jamie Gossard - never ignore older introductions.

Dan Trimmer - Conversions are important to broaden your gene pool.

Both great tips, James!

Although conversions can be tricky, using them has produced my best seedlings.

OW OW OW Why have my ears been burning lately??? OK....this thread is just too good to pass up:

Best Advice:

AL GOLDNER: Tetraploids can be inbred a lot more than most people think.....and the biggest breaks come from selfing and line breeding for generations...even your entire life

CURT HANSON: Don't let daylilies become your whole life

DAN HANSON: Question: How can you tell when a hybridizer is lying???? Answer: If Leslie doesn't tell you, I'll tell you tomorrow.....LOL

My best advice actually came from the iris hybridizer, Keith Keppel, back when I was fixated on iris. He advised not to waste my time crossing two more recent introductions created by the same hybridizer, but rather to make crosses on plants of two different hybridizers or crossing each with older introductions. He said I should realize that when I thought of possible results from a cross of two plants by the same hybridizer, I should rest assured that that hybridizer had already thought of all possibilities and was crossing those two introductions for a few years before each was even introduced.

But of course if you're just making crosses for fun and not for a future introduction, who cares... Thumbs up

She rises, she rises....lol. Hi Miss Davi...thank you for coming to straighten things out! Your vision and insight will help us all.

And Betty,

I've heard the same thing in daylilies. Even that it was disrespectful to make the cross. I normally don't cross two from the hybridizer, but there have been rare occasions. Two cases for trying whatever feels right would be:

DR. VAN'S LILY MERLOT, which is from two of Curt's, TOUCH OF FAUST X ACCIDENTAL TOURIST.

This is great. @Ahead Steve do you use any of Karol Emmerich's chalky eye/water mark plants? I'd have to go look but I know she has some that produce gorgeous babies.

Great examples, Steve -- and I love both of those seedlings! I also know James also got a real beauty from (I think) a cross of DRAGONFLY DAWN X WAVES OF JOY? Is that correct, James? And Becky also has a gorgeous seedling that I think came from a cross of two from the Trimmers, and it might be the one in her avatar.

But I do seem to remember that advice when I make crosses, because crossing the Trimmers' beautiful patterns with each other just seems natural to me but so far I've tried to avoid doing so and instead make a cross with another hybridizer's patterned daylily -- although when I go into a pollenating frenzy who knows what will happen... Hilarious!

You're right Betty - it's DD X WOJ. It is also the reason I wanted DROP IT LIKE IT'S HOT - I've wanted to make this cross for a while.

I'm new to hybridizing, but here are two biggies I hear time and again and keep in mind:

1) don't forget about older cultivars
2) Worry about the plant characteristics first, THEN focus on the pretty face.

Betty - You are correct except I got the seeds from Rich on the LA. My avatar is one of several seeds of Dragonfly Dawn x Dragonfly Dawn. I love, love, love it! Dragonfly Dawn is one of my favorites, even though I don't actually own the registered plant. I have numerous seedlings from it though and just got some more seeds from a VERY, VERY generous person here on the forum!

James - Your seedling is a real beauty. My eyes are smiling just looking at your photo of it! Yeehaw! Going to make a very good parent, I am sure of that!

It's been way too many years to remember who the hybridizer was that told me this but he said that after I crossed a few daylilies, concentrate on the seedlings from those crosses. He said that those seedlings are now your own and build from them. That way no one else will have the same genetics that you have.I know he was from Florida. I have tried to follow his advice by using my crosses and crossing them with other daylilies that I have acquired over the years but I do enjoy using other plants from various hybridizers as well.

Ban Bachman: Permanent Marker Isnt Permanent, Plant habit, Plant Habit, and Plant habit

Don Herr: Whole theme, you can be a great hybridizer without planting 10000 seeds a year. Size means nothing.

Nan Ripley: Dont intro with ten fans of a plant.
