I've heard the same thing in daylilies. Even that it was disrespectful to make the cross. I normally don't cross two from the hybridizer, but there have been rare occasions. Two cases for trying whatever feels right would be:

DR. VAN'S LILY MERLOT, which is from two of Curt's, TOUCH OF FAUST X ACCIDENTAL TOURIST.
