Well Mayo I was just funnin with you. Green Grin! Seriously - you will have more questions. Feel free to ask. After 40 years of growing plants, I still have zillions of questions.

Just another point. Given your zone, I would think that it will not get brutally cold in your garage.

When you click on the quote for a new message, it puts the whole quote in a box and in brackets [ ] in the 'post a reply' part. Within those brackets you can cut or delete any part of the quote you don't want to use or you can leave it as is. Your message is typed outside of the brackets, either above by using the space bar to give room or after. Does this help? I had trouble with this also for a long time.

Well...that is simple. Wonder why I couldn't get it right before????

Thank You! Hurray!

It didn't come easy for me. I don't know why. I still don't know how to do multiple quotes involving more than one message like David and Mayo did in their posts. Smiling

You have to keep cutting and pasting the opening and closing quote texts.

Do you need more than one tab open? When I select the quote option, it takes me immediately to the reply section and there is no means of selecting the quote on another post. Am I making any sense? This is truly 'muddy', I'm thinking Smiling .

Other than having 2 tabs open and cutting and pasting - I do not know how to copy from several posts. All I have done is break up a quote and reply to each question from Mayo above.

Copy the slash quote close thingy where needed and then copy the opening quote thingy.

Each set of those in their brackets creates a block of quoted text.

If you want to test it - go to the Sandbox forum and practice.

I'll just set up the tent and the lamps and we'll see how things work out Whistling
I don't expect very low temps in the garage either, but it might get chilly later on during the Winter Shrug!
I have a thermometer that shows the lowest and highest temps during a certain period of time, so I can keep an eye on it Thumbs up

I'll keep notes and make photo's so all you can see what's happening Big Grin

Thumbs up Thumbs up

Germinating seeds are far more susceptible to low temperatures than established plants. Most seeds like to be between 60 - 75.

BTW - what are you planning to plant?

I've germinated and potted about 170 DL seeds late this Summer / early Fall Whistling

My seedlings vary in size from 2-3 inch to perhaps 5 inch and I kept them on my (open) porch.
But with the 4 storms we've had this November and December I saw quite some damage to their leaves Thumbs down
So that's why I want to put them in my garage.
(ánd perhaps start some new seeds later on in Winter Hilarious! )

I just started about 40 daylily seeds, all tets...the last of my seeds! (I need to get more seeds!) I start in shallow dish with perlite on top, moisten, put seeds on top, then slide it all into a ziplock bag...works really well, have done it this way for years! I would LOVE to start about 1000 seeds this winter...but am out of seeds to start :(
Green seedlings alway cheer me up Smiling

sooby said:Becky, daylily seeds are considered relatively short-lived but, as has been said, it depends also on how they are stored. For more info see this article on harvesting and storage of daylily seeds on the AHS site, click on the bottom of the three articles on this page:

http://www.daylilies.org/AHSar...

That said, I've heard of people getting germination from daylily seeds that were fairly old so you've not much to lose by trying. You can test viability by dropping a few of the seeds into hydrogen peroxide:water at around 1:5 to 1:9 and leaving them at room temp but out of the sun for a couple of weeks or so in the solution.

@sooby Sue, in that article what does it mean "peeled". Did they cut off the black seed capsule? That sounds like a dextrous task, surely? It might be beyond my task-motor-skills, for example.

Glen, as far as I remember they tried various degrees of peeling. The black coating (a substance called phytomelan) is fairly easy to scratch off with one's fingernail although occasionally a seed will fly across the room in the process (I've tried it). Underneath the black layer is a brown papery layer. That can be scraped off as well but I don't recall its being necessary. Peeling the seeds does hasten germination if the seeds are not stratified and are still dormant. A downside is that, in theory at least, by removing the protective black layer the seeds/seedlings become more vulnerable to infection until they've grown past that stage. That did happen when I tried it I seem to recall. Mike Huben experimented with shaking daylily seeds in a jar of sandpaper to remove enough of the seed coat to break seed dormancy and found that it worked for him but I'd give the same caveat for that method too. It's interesting that daylily seed coats are not impervious to water yet removing the coat has an effect on germination, thus daylily seeds respond to either stratification (chilling) or scarification (abrading of the seed coat), or soaking in diluted hydrogen peroxide, while soaking in plain water appears to have a negative effect on germination.
