I am hoping to have all of my tubers in the ground by Sunday after next, leaving for the APS Peony Convention the following Monday! My only questions is what would you do for the few that have started growing but aren't tall enough to have leaves above soil if I put them 6" deep? I'm assuming that I'd still put them at the correct depth but backfill as they emerge? I'll be gone a week, don't think any would survive the baggies for that much longer. I've had them outside under a huge pine for the last several days so they should be okay in their permanent spots. They already get some direct sun early mornings so should be semi-hardened off already.

Georgia is a whole nother world from Wisconsin, but ours won't choke out in the heat of July.

I admit I am jealous of your blooms now though - Its not even quite iris season here.

Geof is right. Growing in Georgia is so totally different from growing in more northern climates. Mine will hopefully go out next week.

We have loads of iris buds but only one tall bearded in bloom.

I tilled the garden again this morning and pounded in stakes. Also added some nitrogen and potash as per my soil test. I hope to plant early next week after this weekend's expected rain. The dahlias in planters look like they're dying to get into the ground and the ones in baggies have had a growth spurt in the last week with many leafed out several inches higher than the folded down baggies. Boy, I'm glad I thought of starting them like that! No, seriously I heard about that from Geof. lol And Geof, I tip my hat to you! So much easier to get the water down to the roots, not to mention it's a great space saver. I'll keep this one in my bag of tricks for the future.

My iris are starting to bloom and the deer continue to walk right past them. Hallelujah!! Something they won't eat!

Liz - yes - go ahead and put them in the ground. I usually just pinch off leaves that will be buried, but I am not sure I have ever had to pinch off all of the leaves when planting, so leaving them more exposed and then back filling is a good idea for the small ones.

I am going to spend some time this afternoon sorting the dahlias into groups I want to plant together, and then will start the planting tomorrow! hurray.

I have been getting some of the vegetable starts in the ground the past couple of days - feels so good to be digging in the dirt again.

Hi all. I am in Fairbanks (Alaska) for a few days visiting my MIL while D attends some meetings. Gorgeous here. Since D planted out my 77 (he counted) dahlias and I gave up figuring colors then even heights, it should be interesting to see how they grow (colors and heights). I will backfill the ones that don't make the weekend when we get back.

Iris have just started to bud up and I may have one open peony when I get back. Then I will have Laura help me plant out all the annuals and the remainder of the vegies. I have been watching the weather down there (Anchorage) and it has been (typically) cloudy and with some rain. Perfect for newly planted things. Not so much for me. Thumbs down

Need has nothing to do with it.
I know this is off the subject of dahlias, but my planting around my yard is winding up. PHEWW. Still have a few things left to plant but the pace is not so frenzied now.

It's planting day! Purchased the bamboo fencing yesterday, will get out there and start tearing it apart for the poles after this posting. Have around 60 dahlias ready to go outside, then need to continue with the clean up of some other beds.

I have been getting mine in the ground slowly, between the on and off rain and my sister visiting this week, gardening time is tight. I have been getting 25-45 in every day, but still have quite a few to go. I often don't plant until the end of May, so am still ahead of the game, but the rest of my gardens are being badly neglected, and will continue to be until I get these all in.

Gotta set your priorities

All of mine are in but many look pretty sad. Most will perk up I am sure but have to move on to other priorities in the garden like several flats of other flowers, both annuals and perennials from seed. All raised beds are planted and already harvesting things started in the garage. Planted seeds for peas, beans, kale, carrots, to take over when the others planted earlier peeter out.

Where do you guys get the energy? I am beat! I planted 66 dahlias and 3 tree peonies I picked up at a local garden center. They'd finished blooming so it should be safe to transplant, I'm not very good about taking care of things in pots so they'll have a better chance at surviving this way....I'm in the same mode as you, Geof--there are so many weeds and dead stuff from last year in the other beds that I'm embarrassed by them. We're having a garden swap Sunday, not at my house but nearby, don't know what I'll do if anyone wants to see my garden. Maybe just let them see the front beds!

I planted 124 Monday and Tuesday. I have an area tilled and staked for 13 more. That should be all unless I decide to use a bed in front that is partly shaded. Only gets sun after noon. I might end up using that bed since I have extra plants. But I'll wait to see if we get the t'storms the weather experts keep talking about. The extra plants might not end up being extras if I have to replace some rotters. Is it possible to get an accurate weather forecast these days? And why do they bother with an 8 day forecast when they can't get it right two days ahead? Sorry, I'm tired. lol
