Jelinda....each species and each cultivar has many variables to determine the time it takes to bloom them. Some NEVER bloom because the variables are higher. I would reckon that you could take one (1) hoya, say H. carnosa, from 10 different people and grow them all in the same environment with the same care and the same nutrition and you would have 10 different answers.
It's all about choices.

Hi everyone, today I found a Hoya Rope at Lowes and brought her home. I also wanted to take a few cuttings from it, what would be the best way to get them to root? Put them in water or straight in soil? Thanks! Smiling

Jojoe,

To answer the web-sight question there are two great sights over on Cubits dedicated to hoya and some very very knowledgeable, friendly people.

One sight is Carols (to modest to toot her own horn) called Aloha Hoya
the other Hooked on Hoyas

Katie...you might try the sites on Cubits...there are some good tutorials offered.

BASICALLY: have you rooted philodendrons? KInda/sorta the same method. Both are Epiphytes...like to grow in pots like they grow in the wild....with air around their roots in light chunky soil....Hoyas are not hard to grow...we just expect more from them than they can offer... Whistling

Tarev,Lovely plant want to see the blooms when they open!!! Hurray!

I have a H. DS-70 that started blooming last sept or oct. and is still in bloom. Are some Hoya's constant bloomers & i guess the the H.DS-70 would be one?

I am also just tinkled to death because i have 2 other Hoya's blooming or fixing to bloom!! Thumbs up I figured i would have them for years before they would bloom for me.

Every now & then i put my HB's in the shower and water them & it rinses any dust off the leaves. This is what i found the last time i done this. This plant is one i had a hard time getting an exact ID on, the best advice i got was, it's could be either an H.Kentiana or H.Wayetii, wait until it blooms to then it will be easier to ID.So i am excited about this one blooming.
Thumb of 2013-03-26/jojoe/874449It has quit a few penuncles & they're mostly at the end of the stems
Thumb of 2013-03-26/jojoe/517dc8 I'm surprised they bloomed at all in the house it's was cold & rained Dec,Jan & Feb.The air gets so dry it's hard to keep my plants watered and they usually do dry out more than i would like before i get back around to them. This month it warmed up into the high 70's & an 80 once or twice, with the sun shining. Then my Holiday cactus, lipstick plants & Hoya's all started blooming.

I will post another picture when the blooms are bigger (i hope they do) and see if i can't get an definite ID on the plant.

Have a wonderful day.

tarev: That is a beautiful Hoya multiflora! I had a difficult time growing that one and keeping it alive. The shooting stars are just so pretty!

Jelinda: Your hoya in question does look a lot like H. wayetti: Wax Plant (Hoya wayetii) That was a very easy one for me, at one point I had four large, full plants. The ones I kept in full sun would get very dark reddish-brown leaf edges but the leaf edges stayed green on the one I had in full shade. I no longer own H. wayetti; when I downsized and moved about 1 1/2 years ago I let the last one go to a new home.

Wow Lin - that's one of the few Hoyas (multiflora) that I have *no* problems with. And blooms on the H. wayetti??? mine has NEVER bloomed! Arrrgh!

Lin,Here's a picture of the plant in question last summer outside when getting more sun.You can actually see how the leaves in the summer are so different in the winter that it would make it hard to ID without pictures in both settings.shade & sun.So i guess the H. Kentiana doesn't get the dark leaf edges in the sun,it stays the same. They look so much alike i knew i had one or the other. The bloom should make the ID final right? They all have different blooms right? Thumb of 2013-04-02/jojoe/93e240 now after being inside all winter.

I've heard conflicting reports about H. wayetti and H. kentiana. Some say they are one and the same plant while others say although the leaves are similar in appearance, the blooms are different. Jelinda's plant looks identical to the ones I grew as Hoya wayetti. I found both listed in the plant database but they still look the same to my eyes.

Hoya wayetti: Wax Plant (Hoya wayetii)

Hoya kentiana: Wax Plant (Hoya kentiana)

My Hoya kerrii variegata is now over a year old in my care. I guess it took a year to acclimate to our house, just some very slow growing. For this Spring, I see renewed vigor, so Spring must be its time to make new growth..seeing more new leaves being made this year than last year..as for blooms, not sure if there are peduncles or just more new leafing..but anyhow, just happy to see that it is doing some growing Smiling

Lin, I looked at the links you posted for Hoya Wayetti & H. kentiana.I was always told to wait until the plant blooms and then you can be sure of which one it is.Looking at the blooms in the links i don't see much difference in them. May have to find Carol to see what she thinks, she grows a lot of them in Hawaii and knows so much about them.

Jelinda...Carol here...I haven't a clue. I have heard they are different and I have heard they are simply clones. And it is so hard to tell....I have gotten queries about a plants true ID and when they sent a picture, they hadn't the plant they were talking about!!!! There is enough controversy about them...all stemming from an original publication that wasn't deemed legit (H. angustafolia) that I think it is impossible to tell the difference unless you have a powerful magnifying glass and can dissect your flowers and compare them to the original publication data....
