LOL... it is a lot of mowing. The yard is only .33 acre but it is thick and healthy and requires frequent mowing in April thru June and September and October.

For those who were at my home in Sept of 2015, not sure if you remember but it was mostly clover and dandelion at that time.

I think you must be thinking of Susan's lawn that Spring. LOL Mine was a mess, given it was my first year in that house and I was focusing on making flower beds all year. There was enough clover to feed 500 bunnies for three years and about 40 other varieties of weeds.

Hmmm. My memory of your lawn seems to match Sally's. Through our eyes it was so lovely, yard and lawn.

I spread 4 trailerloads of Leafgro on my flowerbeds and veggie beds and lawn. I would never use human sewage like Milorganite. I use corn gluten on the lawn and 2-6-6 N-Lite on the gardens to balance the compost.

Thanks, Pat... it was green and looked okay given I had just mowed the lawn. And when I say lawn, I mean the clover, dandelion and the other weeds along with the grass. Smiling

There is nothing wrong with some clover in the lawn. They develop deep roots and pull nutrients up to the grass level. And leaving the tops of both on the ground after mowing keeps the nutrients there for a while.

Clover used to be intentionally added to grass seed mixtures for its nitrogen fixing action. After WW II, explosive manufacture was converted to fertilizer production, an effective utilization of the chemical processes in place. Chemical fertilizer eliminated the need for clover, which became re-classified to be a weed. The chemical fertilizer companies also put production capacity into pesticides and the "weed and feed" paradigm was born. Win-win for them.

CAM you may have had a big variety of weeds, but you may fail to appreciate that your total % of weed was, and is, much lower than mine!
Rather, we have a very meadowy looking 'lawn' going on. Where there IS grass, and within the tie-out range, the dog has created vibrant green tufted mounds. You'd be horrified. it is a good example of the grass growing great right now when it has plenty of N. We just have other priorities/demands going right now other than the lawn care.
Plant it and they will come.

In our shady yard, grass is a persistent "weed" in our moss. Big Grin

I LIKE some clover in my lawn. Natural stuff, green, and it does help the grass.

All this lawn talk... I can't even contribute, lol. My front yard has been successfully converted to beds, and the back is a sea of lesser celadine, violets, and twinflower.

I still add clover for the same reason David said. I also find that it seems to help during periods of drought. I appreciate a lawn like Cam's and the work they take, I just don't care if I have more than a nice green space.

I'm having deja vu from last year when we had a discussion about clover in the lawn. Blinking

I'll make a deal with you clover lovers. I won't judge you if you don't judge me for wanting a lawn that is less than 1 percent weeds (clover included). Thank You!

Not a clover lover. When I was a child we kept bees. The only times I got stung by them were when I played barefoot in the yard and stepped on a bee-bearing clover blossom. Crying

Oh yeah... those little honey bees that love clover. I stepped on, and got stung by, many of them.

GT, That was what happened here. Ric put a good bit of work into the back yard and put clover in to help stand up to the hordes of little feet. It worked really good until he was a day late in cutting it and the honey bees moved in. Boy did he get an ear full, from then on the minute I saw one clover head he was out there.
I want to do a very lush grass in the small secret garden area. Also my Mom is really fussing about her grass. It could use some seeding and weed and feed. Dad's lawn was always so well kept. It has gone down hill a bit since he wasn't able to take care of it the way he had before. I hope we can get it looking really good for her.
Life is Great! Holly

Just what we need, another project. Rolling on the floor laughing I'm currently trimming my yew hedge so I can embed a fence into it and add a gate so the pups can join us in the secret garden and veggie garden. Soon as the fence is up my sugar peas can go in.
