gg5....loving your potted plants! I have pots too...sigh. I have beds that need built first. Sighing! BUT I'm loving all the ideas. Keep them coming and your collection is great!

Plantmanager nice Golden Torch and pretty flower. This gives me an idea for a space I have now that I removed a bush from the side of my yard! Green Grin!

Mcvansoest ....yes! Thank you for the correct spelling. This plant had been given to me and I made a label for it. Uhm...couldn't read my own chicken scratch. *Blush* Anyway here's some better views.

BTW saw your photo of the E. huascha. I have something that looks similar. Now we all know how accurate BB store plant labels are but I got one that said, "Trichocereus species." Confused Yeah. So I call it "Trixy". From the way the names shift around it appears nobody knows what to call the Echinopsis/Trichocereus so 'Trixy' seemed about as accurate! Big Grin Do you know what mystery plant 'Trixy" is?

@mcvansoest. Here are a few more photos of that unknown that I think is a form of Utahensis.

Hi Karen,

Definitely A. utahensis. I need to do some research to see if I can get you closer to a variety ID as well.

OK, I think your A. utahensis looks the most like subsp. nevadensis. The alternative subsp. would be utahensis, but those get to be big and these look like they stay pretty small will already offsetting.

Thank you. Yes, this is a mini variety for sure. It's spreading nicely but doesn't look like it will get much taller. I believe it's been in for about 7 years now. In winter it gets buried in snow, and in summer it has gotten up to 103F here. I don't give them much additional water. I pretty much let the rains take care of them.

I hope you don't mind ID'ng all of these noids for us! I have one more growing in that same area. It is also some sort of mini. It is approximately 10 inches high, and I think that is about as high as it will get. It hasn't had any offsets yet, but it's been in the ground the same length of time.

Hi Karen,

First things first: Do you know if this is an Agave or a Yucca?
If it is a Yucca I am not going to be of too much help as I have avoided growing those in any kind of serious manner till now - so I have not really looked into them much.
If it is an Agave it looks a lot like Agave x leopoldi, but I cannot be sure. An alternative would be A. multifilifera - but like A. filifera those do often come with leaf markings, which your plant does not appear to have.
It is what it is!

I am new here. I live in Tucson, Arizona and specialize in growing and propagating cacti from north eastern Brazil. I also grow mostly south American cacti as landscape plants in my front garden patch.

Here is a winter flowering Brazilian:

Welcome! James! You have some nice plants, and we'll look forward to seeing more of your collection.

Thijs, I've been trying to remember and I'm thinking it was a yucca. Is it possibly Yucca nana? I did a quick search and that one came the closest to what I have. It hasn't bloomed for me, so I don't know what the flower stalk looks like. I did look at Agave x leopoldi and it looks very similar to me, so I'm not sure what I have.

Wow, James! As soon as you learn your way around, please help by adding your photos and information to our database. It looks like you could add some very good photos and information.

I agree with Karen! There are almost no photos of Discocactus in the database. They make me appreciate how difficult it must be for a taxonomist! These photos remind me of Echinocactus texensis which is native here. It's no wonder they are always revising the plant families!

I didn't realize Brazil had any arid terrain, so I looked it up and found the sertao region of north east Brazil. How cool is that? I would never have thought Tucson had any common climate with any place in Brazil except for temperature. So I learned a bit from your posting already.

Thank you Donald. Yes the Northeast inland region of Brazil is mostly very arid -- in essence a vast desert -- the Caatinga especially is the habitat of an enormous number of terrestrial cacti and xerophytic plant species.
