I joined ATP yesterday at the encouragement of Baja. I recognize a couple names. Agave, your plants are looking SO much better. You must be figuring out your Arizona H...L. Also mcvanoset (hopefully I got all the letters in there)

I live in Reno, NV in Zone 6b-7a at 5000 feet. We don't get a lot of rain or snow here and the ground freezes to a deapth of 18 inches. I have an outside cactus garden and a greenhouse for all the more tender cactus and succulents. My oldest plants have been with me for more than 50 years.

I'm looking foreward to getting to know you.

Daisy

Welcome! All the new members here are offering some wonderful things to view!! 50 years is a long to grow a plant. I hope to see some the plants that have existed for that long a time period. Smiling

Dutchlady1 said:Our database admins go by the Catalogue of Life; I was told the Plant List which I had used extensively at work is not being kept up to date like it should.

That is a pretty good resource in my opinion. Databases being up-to-date depends on how quickly or slowly the Resource accepts new or changed Taxonomy -- some are very cautious and conservative, others are less so.

Then there are the ongoing inputs from Taxonomy and Field Researchers such as Taylor, Zappi, Robert Wallace, Braun, Esteves Pereira, David Hunt (The New Cactus Lexicon -- "Trichocereus - Echinopsis - Trichocereus") .......... and so on.

Following are popular online nomenclature resources:

The Plant List

The International Plant Names Index (IPNI)

International Organization for Plant Information (IOPI)

The Catalogue of Life (ITIS)

I use The Plant List for all my cacti nomenclature. I really like the nice way it displays synonyms, the names of the attributors and additional information.

I feel somewhat awkward welcoming you Daisy for I am a newcomer myself -- but welcome anyway! I am impressed that you have plants that you have cultivated more than fifty years -- congratulations!!

Belated Personal Information

I wish I would have more included more personal information like Daisy just did in my first post which was very brief. Here goes:

This is my seventy-seventh year growing cacti -- it all began in 1939 when I was ten years old in Lancashire, Northern England (Echinopsis oxygona). I added a few more cacti bought at Woollworth's and they all survived WWII on our living room windowsill behind the blackout curtains. I have since grown cacti and succulents in greenhouses, on windowsills and outdoors in Texas (San Antonio), Japan (Tokyo), Southern California (Victorville/Apple Valley), Florida (Tampa) and, for the past forty six years, here in Tucson, Arizona.

I am strictly a hobbyist grower (I have never sold any plant) who delights in encouraging other enthusiasts by giving them seedling plants, cuttings and offsets from my own plants.

If you all don't mind, I will post random pics of our native Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) -- a plant I dearly love -- from time to time.

Edit: But I think I should start a separate thread devoted to them.

Post away, we love photos! Great pics, James and a lot of them should probably go into the database when you have the time.
Horned toads are a favorite of mine. They are hard to spot. In the spring we have to really watch where we walk, because the little babies are everywhere. They're about the size of a dime when we see them.

And taste like chicken! My best snake story: I was weeding my veggie garden one evening (and talking on the phone of course) when I heard rattling. I looked down and my hand was about 6 inches from picking up a rattlesnake. We both moved really fast after that. My method of getting rid of pesky snakes is squirt them with the hose. They don't seem to like that much.

Here are a couple of my cactus photos. Some just taken tonight so everyone could see.
Thumb of 2016-01-21/DaisyI/070e70
Melocactus - about 40 years old

Thumb of 2016-01-21/DaisyI/f3f0ed
Parodia - this one's for Baja. A continuing discussion about what this cactus is doing... I think its now fair to say its splitting dichtocomuously, not cresting.

Thumb of 2016-01-21/DaisyI/97888f
The old folks corner: The Old Lady and the Old Man are both 60 years old. The third one back is a Trichocereus that blooms white and just a youngster. The last one is a Ferocactus and is about 1 1/2 feet tall (blooms yellow)

Thumb of 2016-01-21/DaisyI/069574
A Euphorbia I grew from seed about 40 years ago

And an Echinopsis is full bloom (Okay, I admit this is from last spring)
